Seydou Keita to miss Botswana-Mali Afcon qualifier

The former Barcelona midfielder and Mali captain has been declared unfit for the weekend’s 2013 Afcon qualifying faceoff between the Zebras and the Eagles

Mali coach Patrice Carteron on Tuesday announced he had sidelined team captain Seydou Keita for the forthcoming 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifying game against Botswana following an injury the player sustained last weekend while playing for his side Dalian Aerbin in the Chinese Super League.

The Frenchman will also be doing without the services of three other injured key players - Adama Tamboura of Danish club Randers, Guingamp’s forward Mustapha Yatabare and midfielder Tongo Doumbia, who joined English side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan from French Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

Carteron had to adjust his roster by inviting Jomo Cosmos defender Ousmane Berthe and midfielders Alou Bagayoko and Idrissa Nama Laico Traore.

The coach says the absence of his top players will have little effect on his side’s performance against Botswana, following a 3-0 lead from the first leg played in Bamako on September 8.

The return leg is set for October 13 in Gaborone.
