thumbnail Hello,

Jim Knight thinks the Czech Republic international, who is on loan from Udinese, can prove his quality in the Premier League and be the Baggies' top scorer

With a new Premier League campaign just around the corner, there are a huge array of markets for eagle-eyed punters to profit from. Although a season-long bet isn't everyone's preferred wager, bets of this nature can offer both good value and a long term interest in a particular team or player.

One such bet involves how many Premier League goals Matej Vydra - who has just arrived at West Bromwich Albion on loan from Serie A side Udinese - will score.

Such signings can often prove to be tough to judge, particularly for players with very little experience such as 20-year-old Vydra but fans of the Championship will no doubt remember just how impressive the Czech Republic international was in his debut season in England at Watford.

Vydra was one of the players loaned to Watford by Udinese thanks to the fact that the Pozzo family have controlling stakes in both clubs, as well as Spanish side Granda, and the 20-year-old came close to ensuring that the Hornets were the ones playing Premier League football this term.

Watford were beaten by Crystal Palace in the play-off final in May but that should do nothing to detract from a superb campaign for Vydra which saw him score 22 league goals and claim the Football League Championship player of the Year award for the year and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

Understandably his first team opportunities at Udinese would be limited this campaign so the decision to return on loan to England is a logical one and joining Steve Clarke's progressive Baggies side could prove the catalyst for another impressive goal tally, albeit at a level higher than he's previously played.

While Vydra is far from the final product his impressive burst of pace, instinctive finishing and intelligent movement mean he should feature heavily in Clarke's first team plans this season and Bet365 price him as a 5/6 (1.83) shot to score over 6.5 goals, a tally which looks well within his reach.

For punters in the market for a bigger price, the market on who will finish as West Brom's leading Premier League scorer this campaign could be of interest. Republic of Ireland international Shane Long is a 11/10 (2.10) favourite with BetVictor but has yet to score more than eight league goals in any one Premier League season.

In fact, he has only broken into double figures in the league once in his career, netting 23 Championship goals in the 2010-11 season with Reading before his move to the Hawthornes.

While Nicolas Anelka's experience and talent could prove vital for Clarke, his goal scoring exploits in recent years and advancing years leave question marks about whether he should be a 2/1 (3.0) chance in this market.

While 125/1 (126.0) quotes about Vydra competing with the likes of Robin van Persie and Sergio Aguero for the Premier League top scorer award may prove out of his reach, a double figure goal tally could see him well placed to reward backers of the 4/1 (5.0) that he finishes as West Brom's leading marksman in the league this term.
