thumbnail Hello,

The former Twente boss' reputation has never recovered from his spell in charge of the Three Lions, but our tipster thinks he would jump at this chance

After a disastrous European Championship caused Stuart Pearce to fall on his managerial sword, England Under-21s are in search of a new coach who can bring the best out of the nation’s most promising players.

Despite having been sacked after just two months in charge of Blackburn Rovers, Michael Appleton retains a strong reputation for nurturing young talent, and is joint 6/4 (2.50) favourite with BetVictor to replace the former Manchester City manager.

Next England Under-21 manager

Odds from BetVictor
Michael Appleton/Paul Ince 6/4
Gareth Southgate 4/1
Peter Taylor 10/1
Terry Burton/Glenn Hoddle 16/1
Steve McClaren 20/1
Sol Campbell 40/1
Paul Ince has only been in charge of Blackpool since February, but is nevertheless also favoured at 6/4 (2.50) to take charge of the Young Lions this summer.

Gareth Southgate’s previous experience as the FA’s Head of Elite Development makes him another front runner at 4/1 (5.00) and may represent an attractive option considering he is currently out of work as a coach.

Former incumbent Peter Taylor has a long-standing relationship with English football’s governing body, but his Under-20 side’s equally lacklustre showing at this summer World Cup would make him an underwhelming choice, at odds of 10/1 (11.00).

Terry Burton’s track record of bringing through exciting talent has earned him a coaching role at Arsenal’s prestigious youth academy and the former Wimbledon boss is available at 16/1 (17.00) to make the step up to the England Under-21s.

Glenn Hoddle’s work in helping young British players resurrect their careers at his academy in Spain has made him a firm favourite among many observers, but his shaky relationship with the FA means the former England boss is an outside choice at 16/1 (17.00).

Despite recently being appointed as a part of the coaching staff at QPR, fellow former England manager Steve McClaren has never hidden his desire to work in the national team set-up. His unusual three-month contract bears the hallmark of a man eager to leave his options open, making odds of 20/1 (21.00) very inviting on him taking up the role.

The former Three Lions boss was highly regarded during his time as coach at Manchester United and this job represents the perfect opportunity to rebuild a reputation that was shattered in this country for his disappointing spell in charge of the senior squad.

Alternatively, Sol Campbell has allegedly made contact with the FA with a view to taking the job and his confidence could make the rookie coach a lucrative long shot at 40/1 (41.00) to land the position.
