Bradley Grobler netted the only goal of the game as SuperSport United edged Orlando Pirates 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon

Orlando Pirates came into this league encounter looking to redeem themselves at the expense of SuperSport United in Tshwane, as coach Vladimir Vermezovic made seven changes to the team that lost to Mpumalanga Black Aces on Wednesday.

Matsatsantsa, coming from a 3-1 defeat to Maritzburg United, were also seeking three important points to improve their position on the log, going into the final few games of the season.

Cavin Johnson's charges launched their first attack inside the opening five minutes, but Dino Ndlovu had a heavy touch on a through ball played to him by Lebogang Manyama, and Senzo Meyiwa made a comfortable save.

Thuso Phala should have done better inside the Pirates' box in the 19th minute, but his left-footed effort was punched back to play by Meyiwa, although the former Chiefs midfielder should have easily played it to Ndlovu, who was in a better position to score.

Kermit Erasmus took too long to take a shot on the edge of the box after 20 minutes and allowed Thato Mokeke to make a great tackle for Pirates' second corner of the game.

Happy Jele was given time and space outside United's penalty area in the 38th minute, but the Pirates' fullback blasted his shot wide of Ronwen Williams' goal.

Tlou Segolela came close to breaking the deadlock in the 41st minute, but his attempt came off the upright after a finger-tip save from Williams, who did well to guard the near post.

SuperSport United created the best chance of the game in the 56th minute when Phala outpaced the Bucs' defence on the left flank before playing a decent cross into the box, but Phungwayo arrived before Grobler to clear the danger.

Mor Diouf tripped Sifiso Myeni to concede a free-kick on the edge of the box a few minutes later, but Daine Klate's curler from the resultant free-kick sailed over the bar.

Enocent Mkhabela forced his way through Pirates' defence toward the hour-mark, but his attempt at goal was brilliantly pushed around the post by goalkeeper Meyiwa.

Matsatsantsa then took the lead in the 76th minute through Bradley Grobler who tapped in Phala's cross from close range to silence the Pirates' fans up in the stands.

Phala showed his class and pace on the far side and left Phungwayo standing before firing at Meyiwa, who parried his shot back into play as the home side looked to kill the game.

Phala continued to terrorize Phungwayo on the left, but the Bafana winger again failed to beat Meyiwa, this time guiding his shot wide of Meyiwa's goal.

Pirates never really did enough to get the equaliser as they went on to suffer their second successive defeat under Vermezovic to allow Matsatsantsa to move up to fifth on the PSL log.
