SuperSport United easily beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-0 to move up to third in the PSL standings in a match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday
SuperSport United came into this clash knowing that only maximum points will take them up to third on the PSL log, and two points behind second placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
The home side dominated possession in the early stages of the game, and created several good chances to take the lead, but they were poor in the final third.
Matsatsantsa should have broken the deadlock as early as in the 10th minute when Bennett Chenene sliced past two defenders, but Bafana Nhlapo came off his line to guide him away from the goal.
The visitors had no answers as SuperSport continued to push forward, and it wasn’t surprising when the home side took the lead in the 28th minute through Thuso Phala who slotted home from close range after Nhlapo had blocked Sameegh Doutie’s shot.
Peter Ndoro missed a sitter on his Aces’ debut just before the interval after a through ball from Mabhuti Khenyeza with only Ronwen Williams to beat.
Aces played a much better football in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Themba Zwane shooting from the edge of the box, as AmaZayoni looked for an early response.
However, Chenene doubled the home side’s lead on the hour mark having outpaced the Aces defence from the counter attack. Six minutes later, Khenyeza struck from distance and forced Williams to go down to his left for a fine save.
Black Aces were awarded the free-kick in a very dangerous area with 10 minutes to go, but Method Mwanjale’s attempted free-kick went wide of Williams’ goal.
Phala should have easily made it 3-0 in the 89th minute, but the former Chiefs midfielder narrowly missed the target with Nhlapo well beaten.
Khenyeza ballooned his effort way over the bar from inside the box in stoppage time when he should have picked the spot to at least pull one back.
