Live Commentary

  • Thanks for joining Goal.com South Africa for tonight's live commentary. Be sure to join us on Saturday for South Africa's next friendly against Algeria, which will be an all-important clash for the home team in Johannesburg.
  • This was not the result South Africa was hoping for, with the Africa Cup of Nations only ten days away for the hosts. A disappointing result for the home side but a solid and impressive display from Norway, who stuck to their style and tactics. Bafana could not employ their own tactics or short passing game which meant their attacking potential was stunted throughout the encounter. A few good chances at the end were not taken by the home side and tomorrow's headlines will not be good reading for the Africa Cup of Nations hosts.

PHALA!! A great ball from Serero tee'd up Phala but his finish is not up to standard in what must have been South Africa's best chance of the match. Cries of anguish are heard throughout the stadium.
  • 83'
South Africa win a corner after another good run by Phala, who has been one of the most impressive performers for the home side tonight. Serero has a shot inside the box and his effort is almost deflected into goal.

Serero has a chance!! Phala sends in a low ball once more, as Serero shows a great turn of pace to try and find the equaliser, but his effort is smothered by Almenning. The whistle is blown as Almenning seems to have come off second best after that challenge

Elyounoussi strikes for goal!!! Khumalo makes up for an initial poor clearance which gave the Norwegian captain a chance to score with a vital block.
  • 65'
South Africa are still lacking in the fluency department so far as they concede a corner kick. Ruud sends it in but Pedersen heads the ball out for a goal-kick.

  • The second half is about to commence as Tokelo Rantie comes on for Katlego Mphela for South Africa.
  • A rather disappointing show by the home side sees them trailing at the break, with Norway's tactics and style troubling South Africa. A frustrated crowd coupled with an equally vehement-looking Gordon Igesund will mean Bafana Bafana will need to improve on their first-half display. Egil Olsen will not want to change too much in the second half as Norway look impermeable in defense and resolute in the midfield. • 45' + 1'

Mphlea spurns another chance with a well-timed run in the box. Really poor defence from South Africa as a mistake from Masilela led to the chance for Elyounoussi and both central defenders failed to close down the fleet-footed striker who was calm and clinical with his finish.

GOAL FOR NORWAY! Elyounoussi the captain fires in a composed left-footed strike and the visitors have the lead.
  • 39'
South Africa are starting to show some more signs of life as they win two corners in a row and control the game outside Norway's box. Norways continue to snap at the heels of Bafana's players whenever they are in possession which is making it difficult for the home side to string together quick passes.
  • 36'
CHANCE FOR MPHELA!! Phala bursts down the right and sends in a low cross which seemed perfect for Mphela to shoot, but he slips at the vital moment.
  • 35'
Norway can't seem to get to grips with their own attacking play either, even though Gashi has shown excellent control in the midfield.
  • 33'
A period of sustained Norwegian possession is ended as Chabangu finds Tshabalala who creates a chance for Ngongca in the box. The right-back decides to cross rather than pull the trigger even though he had a chance to do so.
  • 31'
This game needs some action! Bafana Bafana look off the pace at the moment, as Norway are able to defend with ease and launch their own counter attacks which also lack sufficient energy.
  • 28'
Sangweni shoots with a speculative effort from 35 metres out. A bit of a sign of the times for Bafana there, as they struggle to create any kind of fluency in the attacking third.
  • 27'
South Africa build from the back once more, but their passing accuracy and speed is not good enough to trouble a disciplined Norwegian defense.
  • 25'
South Africa win a corner as they show some more promising play down the right flank. Tshbalala provides but Norway are able to deal with the final ball by the winger.
  • 24'
Riise shoots!!! Khune shows a rare moment of lack of concentration as he spills the midfielders shot which does not fall into a dangerous area.
  • 23'
Khune clears with a powerful kick and Mphela is able to control well and win Bafana a free-kick, which they turn into a bout of possession which ends in a weak attempt by Tshabalala from the left flank.
  • 21'
Chanbangu misses an opportunity in Norway's box and claims a hand-ball.
  • 20'
Free-kick for Norway around 35 yards out. Ruud takes it and Gashi shoots! But South Africa are able to deal with a dangerous attempt by Norway's most experienced player on the pitch.
  • 18'
Elyounoussi has another chance to hit a volley as Gashi sends in a cross to the far post. Norway look dangerous on the counter and should not be underestimated.
  • 16'
MPHELA!!! The first real chance for South Africa is created by Letsholonyane as he releases Mphela in the box with a crisp pass but the Sundowns striker cannot finish with his favoured right-boot. He goes on with what looks like an injury which will be a concern.
  • 15'
Bafana have started to control possession in what looks like a real game of chess in the middle of the park. Norway are making it difficult for South Africa to find any kind of space.
  • 14'
Mphela bursts down the left side and tries to find space in order to shoot with his right boot, but Norway are able to clear.
  • 12'
Phala and Yeye try to combine down the right hand side but the Golden Arrows winger falls too easily outside Norway's box. Igesund is showing his frustration on the sidelines as his side struggle to create any kind of momentum going forward.
  • 10'
Mphela is almost free on goal but Almenning is able to clear for the Norwegians. Norway have packed the defense and are closing down well in their own third, which Bafana can't seem to deal with during the opening 10 minutes.
  • 8'
Elyounoussi looks like a dangerous prospect for South Africa, as the Rosenberg striker almost finds space in the box. South Africa's short passing game has not fired yet as they send a poor long ball forward.
  • 6'
Jensen is tackled unfairly by Ngongca and the Norwegians take a free kick which they fail to create a chance with. Some fairly robust challenges out there so far as Khumalo is thundered into by a Norwegian player and South Africa have a free kick in their own half.
  • 4'
A good start to the game for Norway as they create a chance for Elyounoussi to hit a volley at the near post, followed by some good play outside South Africa's area. But Bafana Bafana soak up the pressure and counter with their own attack led by Chabangu.
  • 1'
Here we go! Norway kick off and send a long ball forward.
  • We are almost ready for kickoff here as Khumalo and Elyounoussi shake hands and a moment of silence is held for Barry Stander.
  • Around 30 000 fans have turned up at the Cape Town Stadium tonight and the stands are awash in the colours of yellow and green.
  • The players are out on the pitch and kick-off is imminent in Cape Town. First-up the national anthems!
  • Norway: Jarstein, Ruud, Madsen, Berge, Vilsvik, Gashi, Elyounoussi (C), Bjorn Riise, Erik , Jenssen, Soderlund
  • Norway's squad is dominated by locally-based players.
  • South Africa: Khune, Masilela, Khumalo (c), Sangweni, Ngcongca, Dikgacoi, Yeye, Tshabalala, Chabangu, Phala, Mphela
  • With no further facts in my possession as yet, here are the line-ups for tonight’s clash. South Africa have predictably chosen an attacking line-up.
  • Norway will look to play direct football and score goals, according to their coach Egil Olsen. Olsen wants to see which of his young players are adept at playing at the international level.
  • The last time these two teams met, South Africa came away as victors after a late Simphiwe Tshabalala strike and Norway will certainly be looking to avenge this defeat. However, they have travelled with a depleted squad without stars such as Hangeland, Riise, Morten Gamst Pedersen and Nordtveit which should make Bafana Bafana’s task a little easier.
  • Gordon Igesund is excited by the potential of his side and their ability to pass the ball around and attack the opposition with pace and movement. He will want the side to focus on their strengths against Norway tonight.
  • This is Igesund’s 7th match in charge of Bafana Bafana and he will hope to build upon his wins tally of three, but his opposite number, the experienced Egil Olsen may have other ideas. Olsen guided Norway to two successive World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998 and was in charge of the side when they were ranked as high as 2nd in the world in 1993.
  • The final 23-man squad has been named and training is in full swing for Gordon Igesund’s men, with only 11 days to go before the side kick-off the Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde. Tonight’s friendly will show how far the side has come in preparations for the tournament, as they face a tough assignment against a disciplined Norwegian outfit.
