In the end neither side could manage to find the winner despite a flurry of second half chances. Sir Alex Ferguson will be the happier manager after Danny Welbeck headed home an important away goal, but Jose Mourinho will still fancy his side's chances in the return leg at Old Trafford.

GREAT SAVE! Van Persie chests down a long pass and fires a low left-footed shot at Lopez's goal but the Real Madrid shot-stopper does superbly to touch it past his far post.

CHANCE! Phil Jones does brilliantly to get to Ozil's cross before Cristiano Ronaldo and then manages to block the Real Madrid man's path for the rebound.
Ozil earns a free kick inside the Manchester United half after a surge through midfield but United win the ball back moments after the short free kick.
Yellow Card Antonio Valencia
Ronaldo tries to get on the end of a ball into the box but this time Patrice Evra does well to see the Real Madrid forward off.
Into the final five minutes and the game has turned a bit scrappy. There's a break in play as Ramos stays down after a challenge with Valencia.
CLOSE! David De Gea is stood there helpless as he watches Cristiano Ronaldo's free kick struck from 30 yards out whistle just over his bar. Would have been an emphatic winner.
CHANCE! Ryan Giggs has the chance to hit a shot across Lopez first time but elects to to take a touch which allows Ramos to snuff out the chance. Massive opportunity late on.
GREAT SAVE AGAIN! Great handling from the Spaniard to hold on to Khedira's bouncing effort on the half-volley. Real Madrid pushed and probed through Ozil and Modric, before the German eventually brought the best out of the United shot-stopper.
Higuain somehow gets in a shot under pressure from Rio Ferdinand but the Argentine's effort aimed for the far corner is pounced on by an alert De Gea.

After that double chance for Van Persie, Real Madrid have dropped the tempo a little, looking to regroup before launching an assault for a winner.
OFF THE LINE! Van Persie comes close again; this time he is found unmarked in the area and attempts to lift the ball over Lopez but Arbeloa arrives in the nick of time to scramble the ball off the line.
OFF THE BAR! Manchester United are close to taking the lead as Van Persie's shot from close range is parried on to the bar by Diego Lopez!
CHANCE! Great defending from Rio Ferdinand to deny Cristiano Ronaldo the chance to get on the end of Di Maria's low cross. The Manchester United man earned a corner which the visitors then cleared.
Manchester United send men forward as they build an attack through Giggs, he finds Evra who touches it onto Van Persie but the Dutchman's prod into the box is easily dealt with.
The Bernabeu gives Ryan Giggs a warm reception as he comes on to replace Shinji Kagawa.
As things stand, Manchester United have David De Gea to thank for keeping them on level terms. Real Madrid were kicked into gear after conceding the early goal and now intent on undoing some of that damage.
Danny Welbeck charges down the inside left channel but is marshalled all the way by Raphael Varane with the defender doing well to make a challenge. United fail to make the resulting corner count.
GREAT SAVE! What a stop from David De Gea! The United keeper dropkicks the ball clear after Coentrao had slid in at the far post to meet Khedira's cross. Superb reactions from the Spaniard.
Ronaldo threads a clever ball through to Angel Di Maria but the Argentine's touch is too heavy and the move breaks down.
Greg Stobart reports from the Bernabeu: "Tempo has unsurprisingly dropped slightly so far in the second-half but it's still fascinating. Fergie furious is with the referee, he thinks Varane fouled Evra."
Manchester United have a free kick deep in the Real Madrid half but before they know it they are defending a counterattack from the hosts. Mourinho's men work the ball to Di Maria but his shot is deflected into De Gea's arms.
Controversy as Patrice Evra gets in behind Raphael Varane before the Real Madrid defender hauls his countryman down but the referee alows play to go on.
Real Madrid continue to press forward and it's Angel Di Maria who elects to shoot from range. This time he hits a dipping half-volley just wide of De Gea's far post.
Angel Di Maria tests De Gea with another shot from range, but the Argentine's effort is well gathered by the United shot-stopper.
Ronaldo breaks from the halfway line but is stopped in his tracks by a robust challenge from Phil Jones. Real Madrid work the free-kick short and Arbeloa eventually delivers a cross which Evans clears.
Ronaldo tests De Gea with a shot from range but the Real Madrid's forward is tame and the Manchester United goalkeeper saves comfortably.
CHANCE! Manchester United have started the second half brightly. They twice go close to taking the lead, first Welbeck throws himself self at a cross but just misses the ball before Phil Jones jumps highest but heads his effort over the bar from a corner.
Manchester United get us back underway!
Danny Welbeck gave Manchester United a shock lead with a header, but Cristiano Ronaldo went one better, scoring an outrageous headed effort to get the hosts back on level terms. Mourinho's men have been on the front foot for most of the half but the visitors remain a serious threat on the break after a breathless first half.

Real Madrid manage to find Ronaldo in a pocket of space but he doesn't manage to work the space needed for a shot. Moments later the Portuguese comes close again, with another amazing springing header, but misdirects his effort wide of De Gea's near post.
CLOSE! The hosts come close to taking the lead as Cristiano Ronaldo fires a vicious shot at goal from 20 yards which flies just over the bar.
De Gea fumbles on a shot at his near post but manages to recover before Benzema can take advantage.

Ozil evades Evans to meet a long ball over the tope but his shot from a tight angle is pushed wide by from De Gea. Madrid fail to make anything of the corner.
Xabi Alonso finds Ronaldo with a long ball forward, the Real Madrid forward brings the ball down brilliantly before forcing De Gea into a fine save at his near post with a right footed shot.
Another Manchester United corner is hit towards Wayne Rooney but the England international can't get anything on his header at goal.
CHANCE! Welbeck almost strikes again but doesn't get enough on his lunge towards the ball, allowing Diego Lopez to get something on it. The resulting corner eventually sees Wayne Rooney fire a powerful shot a few yards wide of the post.
The way the former Manchester United man lept on to that cross was just frightening.

The stage is set for a trademark Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick, but the Portuguese's effort hits the wall, leaving Robin van Persie in heap, before having another go wild go with his left foot.
Ozil drives in a corner but Evra stoops low to clear. Xabi Alonso collects the ball and starts another Madrid attack but United survive despite Benzema producing a dangerous cross.
Di Maria has a low shot tipped past the post by De Gea after Carrick acrobatically clears a cross from the right side.
Ronaldo looked set to launch a Real Madrid attack but Phil Jones does well to see the danger and win back possession.

Madrid are playing so high up the pitch here, Coentrao the left-back, is vitually a left forward. Mesut Ozil almost opens up the United defence but Manchester United manage to snuff out the visitors chance.
Real Madrid win a free-kick just ahead of the halfway line and Xabi Alonso floats the ball into the box but Evans does well to clear for a corner, but stays down after a clumsy elbow from Ramos.
Ronaldo teases Jonny Evans in the box and eventually wins a corner. Xabi Alonso's delivery is too deep and United regain possession with a throw-in.
Ooh. Van Persie shows some lovely control to nick the ball away from both Arbeloa and Alonso and United win a throw, but Rooney's effort which follows is fired wide.
Madrid are on top as Ozil and then Khedira whip balls into the box but the United defence hold strong and clear their lines.
Manchester United have a chance to launch a counterattack but Rooney's imaginative ball towards Van Persie is well cut out by Varane.
Madrid are putting pressue on the United defence early here, Ronaldo drills an effort that goes well wide from 25 yards.
Oh dear. Raphael Varane, deputising for Pepe, blindly heads towards keeper gifting Manchester United a corner but the resulting delivery is easily defended by the home side.
OFF THE POST! Coentrao comes so close to opening the scoring but David De Gea manages to touch his right-footed curling shot on to the far post.

Van Persie puts his hand in Sergio Ramos' face as they contest a challenge and gets himself booked.
CLOSE! Angel Di Maria comes inside from the flank and holds of Carrick and Evra before rifling a shot just wide of the post from the edge of the area. First real chance of the evening.
Van Persie plays a ball through to Kagawa who makes a run behind the host's defence but the Japan international is flagged offside.
Manchester United enjoy some good early possession but Evra's wayward pass gifts the ball to Real Madrid who break swiftly, but Khedira's shot at the end of the move is dragged well wide.

The teams are emerging from the tunnel, 85,000 waving flags greet both sets of players into an absolutely sensational atmosphere. What a game we have in store!
Couple of pre-match stats for you: Real Madrid are unbeaten in 33 games at home in all competitions. Manchester United have won only twice in 20 games against Spanish opposition. Make of that what you will.
"It's not usual for Madrid to begin the warming-up exercises so late but it's a big game tonight and it's possible that Jose Mourinho has had a long speech to their players. I remember him doing the same in games against Barcelona."

Goal.com's man in the Spanish capital Greg Stobart reports: "The Manchester United players are warming up in the pitch to the backdrop of non-stop singing from their fans housed high up in the stand to my right. They will be outnumbered 20-to-one tonight but they will certainly make sure they are heard."
While Sir Alex Ferguson opts for Jonny Evans alongside Rio Ferdinand in defence with Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa supporting Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Phil Jones continues in his defensive midfield role, with Sir Alex suggesting Rafael will be tasked with keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.
Jose Mourinho puts his faith in youngster Raphael Varane to partner Sergio Ramos in the heart of Real Madrid's defence with Pepe left on the bench. Xabi Alonso, though, does return to Los Blancos' starting line-up alongside Sami Khedira in midfield. Cristiano Ronaldo faces his old side for the first time since making a £80 million switch in 2009.
