Polokwane City claimed a narrow 1-0 win over AmaTuks at Tuks Stadium on Saturday afternoon
It was not the prettiest of encounters between AmaTuks and Polokwane City with constant back and forth play between the two teams. Tuks had an early chance when attacker Geofrey Massa got the better of City’s captain Thapelo Tshilo at the back, but the final shot was kept out well by Dino Visser.
At the other end City had a great opportunity when they caught Tuks on the counter-attack following a corner situation. The home side were slow to react and City found themselves with a three-on-one situation on the edge of the area, but failed to capitalize on the golden opportunity.
Steve Barker’s side opted to go route one with goalkeeper Washington Arubi repeatedly knocking the long ball in search of Massa, which became predictable. Meanwhile, the visitors did extremely well in the midfield and defense to contain Tuks, but could not create any goalscoring chances for themselves.
Former Ajax CT midfielder Cole Alexander pulled all the strings in the City midfield, although they did not pose any threat in the opening half hour. AmaTuks demanded 60% of the ball possession but could not convert it into goals.
In the 32nd minute Polokwane City attacker Puleng Tlolane found the back of the net out of nowhere. Alexander initiated the move, followed by a superb one-two interchangeable play between Sphesihle Nzimande and Sipho Jembula, which resulted in Tlolane neatly slotting home from the edge of the 18 yard area.
The second period was a battle in the middle of the park as Tuks attempted to find a way through the tight defense of Polokwane City.
The home side came close to finding the equalizer in the 68th minute when substitute Khethukuthula Zwane broke down the left flank to put in a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but captain Tshilo was well positioned and conceded a corner.
Former Black Leopards shot-stopper Dino Visser did an outstanding job on debut for Polokwane City, and managed to keep a clean sheet to help secure the win for The Rise and Shine.
