Cavin Johnson's return to his former employers was an unhappy one, as Platinum Stars surged to a 3-0 win at home against a tepid SuperSport United side
Cavin Johnson’s side failed to take their chances, while Platinum Stars were clinical in the final third, goals from Henrico Botes and a double from Mokagolodi Ngele sealing the impressive 3-0 win.
Mokagolodi Ngele almost opened the scoring for Dikwena in the third minute of the match, his powerful free-kick taking a slight deflection and narrowly missing the target.
SuperSport had an excellent opportunity to go a goal up six minutes later, Phala’s burst of pace into the box allowing the winger to cut the ball back into the path of Sahmeeg Doutie, but Doutie’s effort from point blank range somehow went wide.
Matsatsantsa had to rely on the safe gloves of Ronwen Williams in the 16th minute, as Robert N’gambi’s thunderous shot from range forced the keeper to dive to his left and block the swerving effort.
Both sides’ attacking games clicked into gear as the first half developed, Thuso Phala a constant threat against his former side.
David Mathebula missed yet another clear-cut chance for the visitors, Sibusiso Zuma’s excellent work on the left hand side of midfield going to waste, as Mathebula’s attempt to power a header past Mpontshane failed to find the target.
The home side punished their opponent’s lack of composure, Henrico Botes displaying some deft touch and opening the scoring with a clinical finish which found the bottom left corner of the net with 35 minutes on the clock.
Dikwena almost doubled the score two minutes after Botes’ strike, Mkhabela’s swerving shot from range forcing Williams to palm the ball into the path of Phala, but the winger received possession in an offside position.
SuperSport continued to suffer from profligacy early in the second half, a cross from Mathebula finding Bradley Grobler with the goal at his mercy, but his decision to take a touch instead of hitting a first-time shot gave Mpontshane enough time to snatch the ball away from the striker.
The home side maintained their superiority and went 2-0 up two minutes later, Ngele’s low strike from a tight angle beating a desperate dive from Williams.
SuperSport United were staring down the barrel of a third consecutive defeat to Dikwena, and launched a charge with thirty minutes to go.
However, Platinum Stars’ third goal put them beyond the visitor’s reach, as Ngele netted his second after a powerful run into the box and a low shot which effectively sealed the result.
The striker almost finished off a hat-trick after Botes released him into space with an incisive pass, but Williams’ smart save denied Ngele’s attempt.
Despite SuperSport’s dominance in possession, the visitors’ attempts to remain at the summit of the PSL standings took a hefty blow as the game ended 3-0 in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
