Match Report: Platinum Stars move into the top half of the table

Platinum Stars caused a major surprise when they thumped Free State Stars 4-0 in their Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

The victory sees Dikwena surge into the top half of the table having taken an impressive 10 points from their last 12 available, the best of any side in the PSL.

It is a first-ever home win for Dikwena over Ea Lla Koto, and also their biggest league victory since a 4-0 success over Maritzburg United in April 2009.

A brace from Thuso Phala, as well as a first Dikwena goal for Botswana international Mogakolodi Ngele and a late Edward Tshabalala strike sealed the points for the home side.

Phala opened the scoring when he ran on to a ball over the top of the visitors’ defence, turned inside the defender and struck a low shot that deflected past Kennedy Mweene in the Free State goal.

Phala had the ball in the back of the net again just before halftime as he rounded Mweene, but the goal was wrongly ruled out for offside.

But it was 2-0 just after the break and Phala was the man again. His neat one-two with Ngele worked him into space and he fired home with his left foot.

It was 3-0 when Vuyo Mere beat his defender and passed inside for an on-rushing Ngele to side-foot home for his first goal in a Dikwena shirt.

After a brief delay as torrential rain lashed the venue, the cherry on top came with a fourth goal as Tshabalala finished well after being set-up by Ngele.
