Platinum Stars 3-0 Ajax Cape Town: Dikwena dominate Urban Warriors in Rustenburg

Platinum Stars 3-0 Ajax Cape Town: Dikwena dominate Urban Warriors in Rustenburg

Platinum Stars move to second spot on the PSL standings after an impressive home performance against Ajax Cape Town

An inspired Platinum Stars outfit defeated a disjointed Ajax Cape Town side 3-0 in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon.

First half goals from Patrick Malokase and Mogakolodi  Ngele were complemented by a second half strike from Thuso Phala which secured the dominant 3-0 victory.

Played in front of a sparse crowd at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, the game saw an early goal from Dikwena as a quick counter attack allowed Ngele space to run into and unleash a shot.

The striker’s drive towards goal was too powerful for Sean Roberts, who palmed the ball into the path of Patrick Malokase. Malokase did not hesitate in beating Roberts at the near post, securing the lead for Platinum Stars in the eighth minute.

With thirteen minutes on the clock the Urban Warriors had an excellent chance to draw level, when Keagan Dolly burst free towards goal after receiving an incisive ball from Losper but the winger could not beat an onrushing Mpontshane, who denied the away side’s best opportunity of the game.

Control shifted between the two sides on numerous occasions and Platinum Stars came close once more after a period of sustained pressure. Henrico Botes received a cross from the right flank and powered an effort towards goal, but his shot was heroically blocked by Mokeke in Ajax’s box.

Dikwena domination became the order of the day as the first half entered its final fifteen minutes, but goal scorer Malokase lacked composure as he blasted an effort at point blank range over the bar.

But Ngele did not hesitate in burying his second attempt of the game in the dying embers of the first half. Phala was the engineer of the goal, supplying Ngele with the perfect defence-splitting ball, which gave the striker the chance to finish which he did with aplomb, hitting a first time effort past Roberts and putting Platinum Stars into a dominant 2-0 lead as the opening half came to close.

Ajax, hanging on in desperation, tried to exert some pressure on their own in the early stages of the second stanza, but struggled to break down a resolute Platinum Stars defence.

Eighteen minutes in the second half, Dikwena’s third goal was scored by Thuso Phala, following another terrific display of attacking football as the winger latched onto an Ngele pass, powered his way through the centre of Ajax’s defence with pace and strength and fired home from just inside of the area.

It was vintage football from the home side and they continued to turn the screw as the second half drew to a close, but could not add to their already impressive tally. The victory leaves them in second spot on the PSL standings, on equal points with Orlando Pirates and one point above Kaizer Chiefs who are set to play Free State Stars later on Saturday evening.
