Orlando Pirates failed to return to the winning ways after they were held 1-1 by Bloemfontein Celtic at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night

Orlando Pirates came into the match against Bloemfontein Celtic, knowing that only maximum points will bring their confidence back, going into the Soweto derby on the weekend.

The home side never disappointed, as they settled quicker than their opponents, with some dominant display in the middle of the park, and Pirates were the first to see the sight of the goals, when Oupa Manyisa unleashed the shot from outside the box, that was easily saved by Celtic keeper Patrick Tinyemb.

Celtic had the real shot at goal towards half hour mark, when Lennox Bacela received a back pass from Lerato Manzini who shielded the ball and waited for his teammates to support him upfront, but Bacela couldn’t keep his effort down.

Moses Mbuyane combined well with Ndumiso Mabena after 37 minutes of play, but his shot wasn’t too powerful to trouble Celtic keeper Tinyemb.

Pirates looked to catch Celtic on counter attack, and Manyisa was given the freedom outside the box from Andile Jali’s effort but he failed to hit the target, as his shot sailed over the bar, for the last chance of the half and the score remained 0-0 at half time.

The visitors attacked Pirates early in the second half, and Joel Mogorosi troubled Pirates defence with his skills, and shot across Senzo Meyiwa’s goals for a restart. The home side, however, came back strongly and won two consecutive corners in the space of 60 seconds, but failed to convert those chances into goals.

Celtic keeper Tinyemb nearly fumbled inside the 10 minutes, and failed to deal with a cross that Mabena managed to connect with, but the Pirates striker headed wide with the Celtic keeper well beaten.

Mogorosi should have given Celtic the lead a few minutes later, but he headed over the bar. Mabena was a thorn to Celtic’s defence, and supplied Manyisa with a fine cross in the 64th minute, but the Bafana headed wide to the relief of Celtic’s bench.

Both sides never really looked like breaking the deadlock, and never created any clear scoring opportunities, as they occasionally visited both goalkeepers. However, Pirates grabbed the lead with 12 minutes remaining through substitute Tlou Segolela, who headed home from a superb cross coming from the right wing to make it 1-0 to the host.

Celtic never troubled the home side, but it was Pirates who looked dangerous. However, Celtic’ defender Vuyani Ntanga broke the hearts of the Pirates fans with an equalizer deep into referee’s added time to give Celtic a valuable point away from home, and it was too little too late for Pirates to get the winning goal.
