Orlando Pirates endured a frustrating afternoon, as they were held to a goalless draw by Al Ahly at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday

Orlando Pirates were quick to settle in front of their fans and had their first shot at goal which resulted in a corner inside the opening five minutes.

The home side had their penalty appeal turned down after Patrick Phungwayo’s shot was blocked by Abdel-Fadeel in the box.

Lennox Bacela should have done better a few seconds later, but his shot from inside the Al Ahly area went wide of Ekramy’s goal.

Mohamed Aboutrika had his first shot on target after 11 minutes, but it never really troubled the Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Tlou Segolela and Sifiso Myeni combined well to create goalscoring chances although nothing materialized from their attacks.

Pirates won a free-kick outside the Al Ahly box in the 30th minute, but Daine Klate could not keep his efforts on target.

The home side continued to dominate possession in the final third, but failed to convert those half-chances they created, as the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Pirates players were again wasteful in the second half despite a lion’s share of possession, as Al Ahly set back and looked to play for a draw.

The visitors, just like Pirates, could not complete more than six passes going forward without losing possession cheaply.

Substitute Thulasizwe Mbuyane wasted a glorious chance to give Pirates the lead in the 70th minute, as he blazed his shot over the bar from inside the box.

Ahmed Saad got himself into a better position with less than 15 minutes to go, but the Egyptian midfielder’s volley went across the face of Meyiwa’s goal.

Klate forced Ekrami to a brilliant save in the last five minutes after a telling cross from Happy Jele down the right.

The Egyptian giants kept Pirates at bay although both sides progressed to the semi-finals of the 2013 Caf Champions League.
