A first half goal from Collins Mbesuma was enough to hand Pirates all three points against Maritzburg United on Wednesday night

Orlando Pirates dictated the pace of the game in the opening minutes of their 4th league game of the season against Maritzburg United.

However, it took them 19 minutes to threaten Shuaib Walters’ goal when Thabo Matlaba stormed from the left hand side, only for his shot to be blocked by Mohamed Awal on the edge of the box.

The home side immediately caught Pirates with the counter when Thokozani Sekotlong sliced past a few defenders before playing the ball wide to Ryan De Jongh who then forced Senzo Meyiwa to a great save.

Pirates then took the lead on the half-hour mark through Collins Mbesuma who perfectly met Matlaba’s cross from inside United’s penalty area to send the crowd wild.

United nearly levelled matters in the 45th minute after Thabang Matuka beautifully played the ball into the Pirates box, but Meyiwa came off his line to parry with his left hand, as Sekotlong and Ayanda Nkosi made their way into the box.

The second half started off slowly with Pirates opting to knock the ball around in their own half while Maritzburg United sat back, looking to catch them on the counter attack.

On 57 minutes, Myeni spotted Mbesuma in the box, but the Zambian forward’s shot was blocked by United’s defence, as Bucs looked for their second of the night.

Delron Buckley should have scored the equalizer in the 64th minute having done well to shrug Lekgwathi off the ball, but the veteran midfielder failed to meet De Jongh’s cross, as the ball went across the face of Meyiwa’s goal.

In the end, Mbesuma’s first half strike was enough, as Pirates collected their second win of the season and closed the gap at the bottom of the PSL log.
