A late goal during injury time ensured Sundowns an 11 match unbeaten run, after their 1-1 draw with Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium
With Mamelodi Sundowns having already claimed the domestic league, they looked calm and composed in the opening stages of the encounter. Maritzburg United, themselves left with nothing to play for, looked confident against the league champions.
The Brazilians fired the first shot off in the match when Anthony Laffor struck an early one from the edge of the area, but his shot was unfortunately blocked by the Maritzburg defense. The Team of Choice had an early opportunity of their own. Bhongolwethu Jayiya picked up a through ball just outside the 18 yard area, before he beautifully turned and stuck the ball immediately, but Thela Ngobeni was well positioned to make the save.
The opening quarter was a back and forth situation as chances were created at both ends. Although, Sundowns continuously attempted from long range, as they looked to end off in spectacular style.
In the space of minutes, Lebogang Mokoena almost found the back of the net for The Brazilians on two separate occasions. With the first, his 20 yard effort had missed the target by inches. While in the second, he had picked up the ball on the edge of the area after a corner failed to be cleared. Mokoena then hit a brilliant shot but Virgil Vries did well to deny him.
The home side dominated the ball possession, and eventually found the opening goal from a counter attack. Kurt Lentjies ran onto a through pass down the left before he whipped a dangerous ball across the face of goal, to which Heinrich Isaacs tapped in from close range.
The Team of Choice did not sit back and defend their lead, and they continued to apply pressure high up in the attacking third. In the 48th minute Lentjies almost turned provider for the second time when his cross into the danger area found Jayiya, who was unfortunate to hit it over the woodwork.
Laffor was repeatedly denied by Vries, and Mokoena came close to leveling matters when his free header went wide. It took a header by Sundowns captain Alje Schut during injury time to level the score. Schut with a pin point header into the near corner, ensured The Brazilians ended the season with 11 matches unbeaten.
