Maritzburg United thrashed Chippa United 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash that was played at the Harry Gwala stadium on Tuesday night

Both Maritzburg and Chippa were coming from defeats to Bidvest Wits and University of Pretoria in the Absa Premiership respectively.

The encounter had a lively start, with Chippa having two half chances, one for midfielder Mhlengi Cele, and another for in-form striker David Zulu. But their efforts failed to hit the target within the first ten minutes.

The first real save of the match came in the 17th minute, when Maritzburg player Khumbulani Banda's well taken effort forced Chippa debutant goalkeeper Fatau Dauda into a decent save.

The home side broke the deadlock three minutes later, when new Maritzburg striker Mike Mohammed connected well with a cross from his teammate Banda, and beat Dauda in the Chippa goal.

Chippa midfielder Cele who looked lively in the night, hit the cross bar, and immediately at the other end Maritzburg midfieder Mondli Cele also struck the bar four minutes from the half-hour mark.

The scoreline remained at 1-0 in favour of Maritzburg United at the half-time break in the Harry Gwala stadium.

Just six minutes into the second half, Maritzburg doubled their lead, after breaking on the counter, and midfielder Nhlanhla Vilakazi's classy long-range finish hit the back of the net.

Chippa nearly pulled one back a minute later, when Chilli Boys captain Andile Mbenyane forced Maritzburg shot-stopper Virgil Vries into a brilliant save.

From there on Maritzburg dominated the ball possession, creating clear cut opportunities which the Kwazulu-Natal side couldn't convert into goals.

In the 85th minute the Team of Choice sealed the home victory, when midfielder Ashley Sheldon Van Wyk made it 3-0 with a fine finish.
