United's Zimbabwe internationals Terence Mandaza (76) and Cuthbert Malajila (77) ensured that their team beat Chippa 2-0 with two goals respectively
Chippa United came into this match being underdogs especially with a bad record when playing away from home. Apart from that the visitors had to dig deep since they are sitting at the bottom of the log.
With that in mind, Chippa did just that as they showed some enthusiasm in the first three minutes of the match.
The experience and combination of Delron Barkley and Dillon Sheppard came to the fore when Maritzburg came close to scoring, as Barkley’s shot hit the right post having beaten the goalkeeper.
That gave a wake-up call for Chippa as Mxolisi Ntshingila tried playing a cross, but it was well defended by the home sides defenders. Andile Mbeyane also had some opportunities for his home side, but he was a bit selfish as he did not pass the ball effectively to teammates in favourable positions.
Former Bafana captain Mbulelo Old John seemed well disciplined at the back, making sure that the home team does not do as they please. In the 21st minute Chippa were denied another goal by Maritzburg goalkeeper Shuaib Walters when he made a great save from Welcome Qalantu’s header.
Both the teams tried attacking but the defenses were strong. Mabizela gave Sheppard a hard time to break through. In the second half Chippa brought Stanton Lewis for Mxolisi Ntshingila in hoping for better results. Another player that also got his run was the talented Masibusane Zongo who replaced Philani Dlamini.
Despite these changes the home team continued to dominate possession with players like Sheppard stealing the limelight. In the 49th minute veteran Brent Carelse tried getting closer to the box as he dribbled the defenders, but it was Walters who had to put a stop to his effort.
In the 51st minute Chippa’s goalkeeper Moegamat Goldman was making his debut, and displayed a great save, from a set piece that came from Sheppard. Mohammed Awal also tried his luck in the middle of the park to get goals for his team, but there was not much that he could offer.
In the 65th minute Chippa came close to scoring once again when Qalanto’s shot fizzed just over the cross bar. The arrival of Zongo made a difference in the Chippa side, and the leadership of Mabizela strengthened them further.
However in the 76th minute Mandaza’s effort was awarded when he scored a beautiful goal inside the box to beat the goalkeeper. Two minutes after that fellow Zimbabwean Cuthbert Malajila scored his ninth goal of the season which saw the home side leading 2-0. His goal was created by Mandaza.
The win has increased Maritzburg's aim to maintain their spot and finish in the top eight of the PSL log.
