Maritzburg 2-1 Black Leopards: Mandaza scores a classical brace for United

Maritzburg 2-1 Black Leopards: Mandaza scores a classical brace for United

Two late goals courtesy of Terrence Mandaza, saw Maritzburg United stealing victory over Leopards on Sunday

The home team won the PSL match in the last ten minutes, while there were earlier signs from the beginning of the match that United were not going to give up. They had only won twice in their previous ten matches at home, so it was going to be a difficult yardstick to overcome from one goal down.

The home team were attacking hard but did not make use of their first half opportunities. Coming into this match Black Leopards 4-0 defeat of amateur team, Cape Town Stars in the Nedbank Cup, seemed to have boosted the visitor’s morale.

Maritzburg striker Terrence got an opportunity to put his name on the scoresheet during the 12th minute, after beating the defenders but failed to convert. After that both the teams tested each other in midfield in a game of chess.

In the 29th minute the combination of Mandaza and the experience of Delron Buckley gave the Leopards defenders a headache. Buckley kept his hopes high as he put pressure on the opposition. If it wasn’t for Leopards goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali, who had conceded four goals, in his previous match, Leopards would have been punished.

In the 35th minute Mtshali displayed a spectacular save from a powerful strike from Buckley outside the box.

In the second half Leopards came back strong, attacking more and giving Maritzburg United more work.

Ten minutes in, Nkosiyabo Nxakane registered his first goal of the season for Leopards from a free kick that was tipped by keeper Walters.

In the 64th United had another opportunity to equalise when Ruben Cloete’s header was taken by Mtshali, from a set piece that came courtesy of Buckley. Mandaza wasted another opportunity from a free header that he received from Dillon Sheppard.

In the 83th Mandaza finally got his break when he scored a beautiful goal, from Sheppard’s header that was supplied by Buckley.

Within two minutes after that goal, Mandaza scored his second goal from just outside the box, to beat Mtshali who was not on his line.
