Sundowns have failed to make it two wins in two games, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars at the Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night

Mamelodi Sundowns started confidently and created two goalscoring chances inside the first three minutes, but none of those were on target.

Platinum Stars nearly opened the scoring in the 5th minute after Lindokuhle Mbatha’s low cross from the right hand side was met by Siphelele Mthembu inside the Sundowns box, but the striker’s shot hit the wrong side of the upright.

It was an end-to-end stuff from both teams afterwards, but no real opportunities were created by the two teams although Sundowns threatened more often.

Despite boasting the best possible team in the field of play, Sundowns struggled with possession and failed to get past through the Stars defence in the first 45 minutes.

The Brazilians thought they have taken the lead in the 49th minute, but Bongani Zungu’s goal was correctly ruled out for an offside.

Sundowns won a free-kick outside the Stars box in the 58th minute, and Dove Wome beat Siyabonga Mpotshane in the near post although the visitors’ keeper will have himself to blame for letting it in.

The game started opening up with Sundowns pushing forward in search of the second goal to kill the game, as Dikwena chased the game.

Tebogo Langerman missed two glorious chances in a space of a minute in the 65th minute, and he should have at least converted one to make the game safe for the Brazilians.

Substitute Henrico Botes nearly made it 1-1 in the 68th minute after a well played cross into the Sundowns box, but the Namibian international had a heavy touch on it and sailed over bar.

Robert Ng’ambi levelled the matters in the 81st minute after Sundowns had failed to deal with Dikwena’s corner, and Mthembu should have initially scored as his header came off the bar.

Botes should have made scored the winner in the dying minutes of the game, but his header lacked power as Kennedy Mweene dived to his right to make a save, as both teams could only settle for a point at the end of 90 minutes.
