Mamelodi Sundowns - Platinum Stars Preview: Mosimane and Johnson's last chance

Mamelodi Sundowns - Platinum Stars Preview: Mosimane and Johnson's last chance

Both Platinum Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns will be desperate to secure a semifinal berth in the Nedbank Cup when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon

Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars will lock horns in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on Sunday afternoon, with both teams aiming to find a piece of silverware this season.

The Brazilians and Dikwena go into the match with no real injury concerns curtailing their squads. Similarily both sides are eager to end their cup droughts and gain entrance into the Caf Confederations Cup.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has been able to return his side to their feet following their poor start to the season, but insists that his team are still underdogs going into the clash against the high-flying Platinum Stars.

“We are underdogs going in this game. We are playing a very good team that has a good coach [Cavin Johnson] and has done well," Mosimane said on the eve of the match.

"We are the underdogs because we are playing against a free-scoring team, who have been doing very well this season.

"We are going to concentrate on this cup. We do not need to worry or be distracted by the league. The Nedbank Cup means a lot to us. I want to go into Africa, it’s important for us to be there.”

Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson has predicted that the winner of the clash on Sunday will go on to lift the 2012/2013 Nedbank Cup.

“The Nedbank Cup will be won by the team that wins on Sunday. We have deserved to reach this stage of the competition, we have done very well and should be commended.“

"By any standard, to end in the top three and win the Nedbank Cup would be a successful season. Not for us only, but any team."

  • Platinum Stars are the second highest scorers in the league, having netted 33 goals. Only Chiefs have scored more (38).
  • In head-to-head stats, Dikwena and Sundowns have met 17 times since 2004, with both teams winning the same number of games (6) against each other, drawing five and losing six against each other.
  • Sundowns have failed to beat Platinum Stars in their last four meetings, with Dikwena winning two of those games while the other two ended in draws.
  • A fortnight ago, Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Dikwena.
