Soweto side Swallows left wondering where next win will come after poor showing in Lamontville, KwaZulu-NatalLamontville Golden Arrows have piled on the misery for Moroka Swallows with a 2-0 Absa Premiership victory at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday.
Swallows coach Zeca Marques was feeling the heat going into this game as his side slide dangerously towards the relegation zone. Their mood will not have improved by another limp showing.
Musa Bilankulu scored the first goal of the game in the opening half, before Mxolisi Macuphu made it 2-0 in injury-time. Swallows played the final 30 minutes with 10 men after a red card for Sibusiso Kumalo.
Arrows were again missing Siyanda Zwane, while coach Manqoba Mngqithi went for a front pair of Norman Smith and Bongi Ntuli. Midfielder Bhekisizwe Nkosi was handed his Abafana Bes’thende debut.
Swallows preferred Aubrey Mathibe in goal for Greg Etafia, while Roger da Costa filled in at centre-back in place of Luvhengo Mungomeni.
Arrows started the stronger and had a trio of chances early on, but Nkosi, Smith and Musonda all shot over the bar.
Ritus Krjauklis found himself with a good opportunity from close-range, but Mathibe was up to the task and saved with his legs.
The home side were deservedly ahead on 25 minutes as Bilankulu headed home from Sibusiso Hadebe’s corner. Just his team’s eighth league goal of the season.
The home team were a man up as well just before the hour-mark when Swallows defender Kumalo picked up his second yellow card, much to the annoyance of coach Zeca Marques.
And two minutes later Nkosi should have made it 2-0 when he headed over the bar with the goal gaping.
Pavels Steinbors in the home goal had to make a rare save as he beat away Katlego Mashego’s 30-yards shot, while Smith and Nkanyiso Madonsela both had excellent opportunities to extend the lead at the other end.
The second goal finally did come as Macuphu converted from Smith’s pass to settle the nerves of the home side and send the fans home happy.
Next up for Arrows is a tough trip to Platinum Stars for an Absa Premiership clash on Saturday afternoon. Swallows will have a chance for redemption as they host SuperSport United on Friday night.
