Was only called into action once in the first half and even that was a relatively tame effort from Di Maria. He could do little to keep out Higuain's header but he was confident when coming to collect the ball.
Was unfortunate to have a legitimate header ruled out in the first half. He maintained concentration throughout the game and helped ensure that Higuain was cut off for much of proceedings.
The Argentine was industrious in midfield and although he did not get to spend an awful lot of time on the ball, he was never rushed and used it wisely. He could perhaps have got forward to support his team on the break.
The left-back left too much space in behind him and kept allowing Di Maria to come inside far too easily. He did not get forward to provide some additional width to his side when they had rare spells in possession.
A physically impressive performance from the Argentine centre-back. He was very strong in defence and was fully-committed to every challenge as he organised the defence capably.
Dropped deep to pick up the ball and propel Espanyol into the final third. He made some clever passes and acted as a pivot for his team's attacks, continually making the most of their time in possession.
A decent performance from the right-back as he remained stout defensively and was not shy of venturing forward. Despite his intent, though, his delivery was not frequent enough.
The Ghanaian worked his socks off as he chased up and down Espanyol's left. He provided additional cover for his defence but did not add the natural width to help get at the Madrid back four.
Put in an energetic display in the centre of midfield, continually hounding the opposition whenever they had the ball. He was quick to close the play and always chased back, though his determination saw him dismissed late on.
Was very busy in the final third, continually hassling the Madrid defenders. However, he was unable to use his pace to get into threatening areas and hardly gave Lopez anything to worry about, though he did get an assist.
A decent performance from the Uruguayan. He made a series of brilliant diagonal runs in from the left that were rarely picked up by the defence. He found space in the area to net the game's first goal.
The keeper was let down by his defence when Espanyol opened the scoring. After that he was rarely tested again, other than a great stop to keep out Stuani soon after.
Appeared nervous and apprehensive in the early stages, with his sloppy touch enabling him to be caught in possession. The second half was very different as he read the play well to make some crucial interceptions.
The veteran centre-back was in the middle of nowhere when defending the corner which Stuani converted from. He failed to cope with the pace of Sergio Garcia and certainly showed his years.
A disappointing performance from the centre-back as he lacked pace and mobility to cope with the passes in behind during the early exchanges. Communication with Carvalho seemed minimal.
Began the game with some strong, striding runs forward but his outing was cut short after picking up a knock. He was withdrawn in the 19th minute.
Directed the play through the middle of the park but seemed to lack the craft to create anything for his side. He did not look particularly dangerous when in possession and could not find the killer pass to serve Higuain.
Á. di María
Drifted in off the flanks dangerously early on and got his team's only shot on target in the first half. Unfortunately he did not keep that up and did not run at defenders frequently enough.
The Croatian made some positive movements forward early on but struggled to find the space to orchestrate things from deep. Nevertheless, he supplied a great delivery from which Higuain equalised.
Given a rare start for Madrid but was unable to impress. Playing wide on the left he lacked confidence to run at the defence and was hardly involved at all. He was replaced by Benzema at half time.
The Argentine did not receive an awful lot of service in the first half, but nor was he at his liveliest. However, he kept trying to get into dangerous areas and grabbed an equaliser for his side with a decent header.
Brought on for Varane in the 19th minute and after taking a few moments to acclimatise to the game, he soon had Madrid controlling possession.
Replaced Morata at half time but could not provide much more of a threat in the final third than the young Spaniard.
Came on for Kaka after 57 minutes but failed to turn the game around. He was eager to take players on when picking up the ball, but he could not pull a save from Casilla.
