Mahamutsa’s powerful header was enough to see Pirates through on the away goal, as the Soweto giants held Esperance 1-1 on Saturday night
Esperance started the game with a high tempo, but failed to create any clear-cut chances until after the 18th minute when Thabo Matlaba conceded a corner.
Pirates should have been 1-0 up before then when Tlou Segolela beat the offside trap into the Esperance box, but Segolela tried to play the ball to Lennox Bacela when he should have taken a shot.
Segolela then came close to breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute, as he drilled his shot into Moez Ben Cherifia's direction. The Esperance keeper did well to parry for a corner.
Esperance's Ragued caught Senzo Meyiwa with a thunderous low shot in the 32nd minute, but the Pirates keeper put his body on the line as the ball bounced off the crossbar for a home team corner.
The Tunisian's won a free-kick in a very dangerous area, but Afful’s casual shot was saved by Meyiwa although the Pirates keeper initially spilled the ball.
Pirates won a free-kick on the edge of the Esperance box in the 41st minute, but Daine Klate ballooned his curler way over the bar, as it remained 0-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
The visitors were all over Esperance in the early stages of the second half and should have been 1-0 up as Klate’s header was superbly saved by Cherifia before Bacela’s effort went wide of goal.
Pirates deservedly took the lead in the 52nd minute through Rooi Mahamutsa who powerfully headed Segolela’s corner into Cherifia’s net to silence the home fans..
The Buccaneers’ joy was cut short as Esperance equalized four minutes later when a well played cross from Belaili was swept home by Iheb Msakni.
Bacela should have made it 2-1 to Pirates towards the hour mark, but he struck his effort over the bar after some desperate defending from the Esperance defence.
Esperance left one defender at the back as they pushed forward for the winner, and that allowed Pirates to catch them on the counter attack.
With a great opportunity, Thabo Matlaba ran with the ball when he should have played it across to an unmarked Bacela.
Then the home side won a free-kick outside the Pirates box with less than 10 minutes to go, but failed to capitalize as Pirates cleared their lines easily.
Klate had a chance to put the game beyond Esperance’s control. The Pirates winger could not hit the target as his shot sailed over the bar.
Thanks to the away goal, Bucs have booked their place in this year’s Caf Champions League final, for the first time since 1995.
