Cape Town City beat AmaZulu FC 1-0 in a PSL match which was played at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.
The Citizens were hoping to snap their four-match winless run in the league having drawn 1-1 with SuperSport United in their previous game which was played in Mbombela last weekend.
Benni McCarthy made one only one change to the starting line-up that faced Matsatsantsa with Ronald Putsche replacing fellow central defensive midfielder Mpho Matsi.
Usuthu were also winless in four league games having drawn 1-1 with Orlando Pirates in their previous match which was played in Johannesburg Stadium last weekend.
Defenders Philani Gumede, Tapelo Nyongo and midfielder Ovidy Karuru all started as Cavin Johnson made three changes to the AmaZulu starting line-up that faced the Buccaneers.
The match got off to a quiet start, with neither side looking threatening in the opening exchanges. But the Citizens grew into the game as it progressed.
However, City were struggling to unlock the AmaZulu defence which was marshalled by Nyongo, who was making his return after recovering from a long-term injury.
A rare chance for Usuthu nearly resulted in a goal when Mhlengi Cele beat the offside trap, but he was denied by City goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
The last chance of a relatively quiet first half fell for Austrian midfielder Putsche, who failed to direct his header towards goal with AmaZulu keeper Boalefa Pule looking on.
It was 0-0 at the interval between City and AmaZulu in their first competitive meeting.
Both teams lost possession at crucial times in the first 15 minutes of the second half. As a result, McCarthy made the first change of the game with Teko Modise replacing Victor Obinna.
However, it was Usuthu`s second half substitute Rhulani Manzini, who nearly made an immediate impact. The striker pounced inside the City box and fired narrowly wide of the target.
The away side continued to create chances in the latter stages of the game. The ball fell for Sduduzo Dlamini after a nice cross from Thembela Sikhakhane, but the AmaZulu winger rushed his shot and he missed the target.
Usuthu were left to rue their missed chances as Ronald Putsche snatched a late winning goal when he fired home following a scuffle inside the AmaZulu box in the 84th minute.
City emerged 1-0 winners against AmaZulu, who were unable to grab an equalizing goal in the latter stages of the game.
