The Red Devils were routed 5-1 by the Mexican side in the fifth place match of the Fifa Club World Cup in Marrakech on Wednesday
Caf Champions and African hopefuls Al Ahly registered their second defeat at the ongoing Fifa Club World Cup on Wednesday at the Marrakech Stadium to finish sixth ahead of Oceania representatives Auckland City.
The Egyptian giants had already been eliminated from the competition but were vying for fifth place against Concacaf Champions League winners Monterrey, but lost 5-1 despite overwhelming support from local fans.
The meeting itself was a historic one as it was the first time two teams are facing each other on two occasions in the Fifa Club World Cup. They also played in last year’s clash in Japan, won by the Mexicans 2-0.
Ahly got an early shock when Neri Cardozo opened the scoring after connecting a through pass from Humberto Suazo from the right wing in the third minute of the match.
However, the Red Devils had a prompt reaction only after five minutes, with Emad Meteab levelling the score after claiming a low ball from Ahmed Kenawi and blasting home his left-foot effort from a tight angle to the astonishment of Monterrey goalkeeper Juan de Dios Ibarra.
Monterrey’s continued dominance paid off once more in the 22nd minute when Argentine-import Cesar Delgado lunged forth into Ahly’s box after reaching a long pass from Cardozo and placing the ball to the side of onrushing Ekramy to put the Rayados ahead at 2-1.
As if the opposition wasn’t as tough as they expected, the Mexicans hurriedly claimed a third five minutes later through Leobardo Lopez, who bent a rocket strike from a corner kick into Ahly’s net, which was too hot for Ekramy’s gloves.
Monterrey completely seized control of the session and also made it four in the 29th minute but Chile international Suazo’s solo effort from the box crashed against the crossbar. However, he won and converted a penalty to keep the scoreline at 4-1 by halftime.
The second half was a replica of the first, with one-way traffic of balls from Monterrey’s end to Ahly’s, and by the 65th minute, the Mexicans put the game to bed when Delgado, after being setup by a defence-splitting pass from Suazo, hit home his side’s fifth goal of the evening.Follow us on Twitter
