Ajax held struggling Pirates to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match played at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night
The home side started the match very well, winger Keagan Dolly intercepted a pass from Pirates midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo just outside the box nine minutes into the match. However, Dolly's shot took a deflection and Bucs goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was able to gather it before Ajax striker Nathan Paulse could make contact with the ball.
Two minutes later, the Urban Warriors attackers combined very well, but winger Carl Lark's brilliant volley from outside the 18 yard area was well saved by Meyiwa.
The Ajax defence looked organized with the Bucs attackers failing to penetrate their defence and Bucs midfielders resorted to kicking long balls forward in search of Kermit Erasmus, Daine Klate and Khethokwakhe Masuku. However, their attackers were failing to connect with the long balls in the first 20 minutes.
Meyiwa was kept busy once again in the 23rd minute when Ajax wing back Cecil Lolo made a good cross from the right which was met by their lone striker Paulse. The tall player forced Bucs keeper Meyiwa into an acrobatic save.
The away side had a bright start in the second forcing the Urban Warriors into conceding two corner-kicks in the first five minutes. Bucs captain Lucky Lekgwathi went on a good run from defence, through the middle and his left footed strike went wide of Keeper Anssi Jaakkola's goal posts in the 55th minute.
In the 68th minute, Bucs substitute Helder Pelembe's thunderous strike at goal from 30 yards out was brilliantly saved Ajax keeper Jaakkola who held onto the ball with ease. It was Pirates' first shot on target of the match.
Twelve minutes later, Mozambique international Stello 'Telinho' Ernesto missed a glorious opportunity just inside the box when found himself unmarked. However, he could not finish off a well taken cross from Ajax substitute Mosa Lebusa from the left.
Pirates nearly broke the deadlock five minutes before full time but Daine Klate's attempt from close range was cleared off the goal line by Ajax vice captain Thulani Hlatshwayo after keeper Jaakkola failed to hold onto a low cross.
