Live Commentary

  • That's all from me, Al Hain-Cole. I hope you enjoyed the game today, which featured some fantastic play at times.
  • Benitez will be delighted to have bounced back from that shock 1-0 defeat by QPR, while Adkins will probably look at the game philosophically as a case of having been outclassed by a better team. The Saints will want to focus their attention on Premier League survival, while Chelsea preserve their chances of retaining the cup.
  • And it's all over! Southampton started the game well and took the lead through Rodriguez's tidy finish, but once Demba Ba got his debut goal to pull the visitors level, Rafa Benitez's men completely dominated and put on an emphatic display that underlines their quality.
  • 90' + 3'
Great surge from Ramires as he carries the ball 50 yards at full pelt before laying it off to Marin. The German winger can't get his cross in though, as it goes behind for a goal-kick.
  • 90' + 2'
Nigel Adkins did not look happy when four minutes injury time was added on. He just wants this game to end. Rodrigues looks equally frustrated, as he strikes the ball way over from 30 yards out.
  • 90' + 1'
The game is winding down now, and it has been very comfortable for the visitors since the break.
  • 89'
That goal for Lampard also brings him level with Tambling's record haul of 25 FA Cup strikes. Do Chelsea really want to let him go?
  • 88'
    Yellow Card James Ward-Prowse
  • 87'
Luiz wants in on the act, but his strike from inside the box is straight into the hands of Boruc.
  • 86'
Lampard is now just nine goals behind Bobby Tambling in the list of Chelsea's top-scorers.
  • 85'
Marin puts a hanging cross into the far post, and it's met by Oscar. He's not the biggest though, and only manages to head the ball meekly into the keeper's arms on the stretch.
  • 83'
    Penalty Goal Frank Lampard
GOAL!!! Lampard gets his goal, stepping up to smash home a penalty with customary ease after a handball is given against Davis. Seemed to come off his chest, but the ref pointed straight ot the spot.
  • 79'
And Benitez follows suit, giving Mata a rest by replacing him with Oscar. The Spaniard has been his usual classy self this afternoon.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionJuan Mata Oscar
  • 78'
Tanadari Lee comes on to make just his third appearance for Southampton this season. The Japanese striker is surelyjust being given a run-out in a lost cause for Adkins' side.
  • 77'
    Yellow Card Steve Ridder
  • 77'
    SubstitutionJason Puncheon Tadanari Lee
  • 77'
Southampton have another half chance, as De Ridder meets a cross into the box but flicks his header wide of the far post.
  • 75'
Frank Lampard looks keen to get his name on the scoresheet, and his strike from the edge of the box is well saved ny Boruc. He only needs one more to become the club's second all-time top scorer.
  • 73'
And that is Moses' last contribution, as he goes off to be replaced by Marko Marin.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionVictor Moses Marko Marin
  • 72'
Ba has an excellent chance to complete his hat-trick, as he rises at the far post to head Moses' cross powerfully down across goal. Boruc reacts superbly though, saving the ball with his feet.
  • 71'
Great save from Tunbull as Southampton break. The Chelsea keeper is out quickly to smother the ball, after it falls to De Ridder in the box. He gets up to keep the follow up out as well.
  • 70'
Southampton look like they want this game to end, with Chelsea completely on top and enjoying themselves.
  • 66'
Frank Lampard is on to replace Ivanovic, in a potentially attacking move from Benitez. Worrying for Southampton...
  • 66'
What must Fernando Torres be thinking as he watches Ba's debut from the sidelines? The Spaniard must surely be feeling a twinge of envy as the Senegalese striker bags two tap-ins.
  • 64'
    SubstitutionBranislav Ivanovic Frank Lampard
  • 64'
Jose Fonte goes off on a stretcher with an apparent knee injury. Jos Hoiveld is on to replace the centre-back.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionJosé Fonte Jos Hooiveld
  • 61'
    Goal Demba Ba
GOAL!!! And it's Ba again. The striker sneaks in behind to meet a teasing ball through by Hazard and sweep the ball home. Southampton's defence were sitting a bit too deep, and they were punished.
  • 60'
Free-kick for Chelsea from the right-hand side of the pitch is lofted to the far post, where Luiz meets it but heads straight into Boruc's arms.
  • 60'
Southampton are finding it difficult to get their foot on the ball now, as Chelsea dominate possession.
  • 57'
Great play once again from Mata, who instantly controls a sweeping cross-field pass before hanging a ball up to the far post for Ba. Boruc comes out to get a hand on the ball though, and Hazard can't get get a shot away on the rebound thanks to fine defending from Shaw.
  • 56'
Davis plays a long ball over the top to Rodriguez, but Turnbull is out of his goal well and collects it.
  • 55'
Southampton are making a change, as Steve De Ridder comes on for the more defensive Morgan Schneiderlin.
  • 53'
    SubstitutionMorgan Schneiderlin Steve Ridder
  • 52'
    Goal Branislav Ivanovic
GOAL!!! Chelsea are in total control now, after Ivanovic leaps unchallenged to gleefully head Mata's beautifully inviting cross home. The big defender had stayed up after the corner.
  • 51'
Mata has the fist effort on goal of the second half, hitting a shot from outside the box which takes a nick off Do Prado and goes behind for a corner.
  • 48'
An unusual sight - Juan Mata misplacing a pass after picking the ball up on the edge of the box. He could have played Hazard in there. Chelsea have started in the manner they finished the last period, looking slick.
  • 46'
    And play is back underway.
  • The Southampton players are back on the pitch already. looking determined to turn things around in the second half.
  • Nigel Adkins will be a bit shell-shocked as he makes his half-time team talk, having watched his side look comfortable for the majority of that opening period before the visitors' quality shone through with two late goals. Still plenty of action left in this game, I'm sure.
  • And that's half-time, as Chelsea go in much the happier after looking second best for the large portions in that half. The Blues grew in stature after gatting their first goal, and are on top now.
  • 45' + 2'
    Goal Victor Moses
GOAL!!! Chelsea have turned this game around, as Moses strikes the ball home from inside the box after a pass from Cole. It was a fine, instinctive effort into the far post from the Nigerian.
  • 42'
Boruc spills two fairly routine shots in quick succession, which is slightly worrying for Nigel Adkins. He gets away with it, but the Polish keeper has not looked entirely convincing in his short time at St Mary's.
  • 39'
The Blues are starting to look more comfortable now, and another nice passsing move results in a cross from Mata, which is only half-cleared. Victor Moses strikes the ball on the volley from inside the are, but it is saved at the near post by Boruc.
  • 38'
That will come as a massive relief for Rafa Benitez, who has seen his side struggle to impose themselves on the game so far.
  • 35'
    Goal Demba Ba
GOAL!!! Chelsea have the equaliser and it's the debutant Ba who gets it after a fantastic move. Juan Mata links up beautifully with Hazard and then dinks the ball over the on-rushing Boruc. The ball looks to be going in anyway, but Ba makes sure by tapping it into the empty net on the line.
  • 33'
The hosts are putting Chelsea under great pressure on the ball, not allowing them to get the ball forward with any ease.
  • 29'
Chelsea have a couple of corners, but nothing comes of either. Boruc claims the second one under little pressure. That will give him some confidence, especially considering some shaky performances recently.
  • 28'
Ward-Prowse turns smartly on the edge of the box after the ball drops to him from a corner, but his shot is well blocked by a Chelsea defender.
  • 26'
Eden Hazard picks the ball up just outside the box on the left-hand side, and looks to curl a shot into the far post. It falls just wide, but is the visitors' best effort so far.
  • 24'
And now they're really not happy. Ba looks to be clean through after Yoshida jumps and misses a lofted ball over the top. A foul is given for a push on the Japanese defender, which looks kind to Southampton.
  • 23'
Chelsea are not happy, they thought Ba was fouled in the opposition penalty are before Southampton broke to score. The striker looked like he was being held, although he was backing into Yoshida.
  • 22'
    Goal Jay Rodriguez
GOAL!!! Rodriguez has put the hosts in front, slipping the ball cooly under Ross Turnbull after a fantastic pass from Puncheon. A shock could be on here...
  • 19'
Jason Puncheon almost plays Rodriguez in, but the pass is cut out. Southampton had a few men in there.
  • 17'
At the other end, Victor Moses almost plays Ba through, but the pass is just too far ahead of the striker and is collected by Boruc.
  • 16'
Southampton win a corner, but it's headed clear at the near post by none other than Ba. The new signing earning his corn already, it seems.
  • 14'
Luiz has his secoind shot of the match, this time it's a little closer in and hits the target, but falls safely into the arms of Artur Boruc.
  • 12'
Demba Ba hasn't had a sniff of goal for the visitors yet, although he has demonstrated with Newcastle how clinical he can be. The Senegalese striker only needs one chance.
  • 10'
The Chelsea fans are in fine voice today, and they've brought a large travelling group with them to the south coast.
  • 8'
David Luiz has the Blues' first attempt on goal, and it's a wild swing from all of 25 yards after a ball comes out to him from a corner. This game hasn't really settled down yet.
  • 7'
Chelsea win a throw-in in a dangerous area, as they attempt to apply some pressure.
  • 4'
Almost a chance for Jay Rodriguez, who couldn't quite get past Branislav Ivanovic after being put through by James Ward-Prowse.
  • 3'
Southampton dominating the possession at the moment, trying to get into their passing flow.
  • 1'
    And we're off!
  • Chelsea, of course, are the holders, having won this competition in four out of the last five years, while Southampton are looking to lift their first FA Cup since their only triumph in 1976.
  • Nigel Adkins makes just two changes from the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on New Years Day, 18-year-old James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez coming in for Rickie Lambert, who is benched, and Gaston Ramirez, who is left out of the squad after suffering a dead leg against the Gunners. Nigel Adkins keeps faith with Artur Boruc in goal, while Nathaniel Clyne fails to recover in time and Adam Lallana remains out.
  • Rafa Benitez throws Demba Ba straight into the Chelsea first team for their FA Cup clash with Southampton, naming a very strong line-up including Juan Mata and Eden Hazard. Ashley Cole returns to captain the Blues in John Terry's absence, meanwhile Frank Lampard is on the bench as David Luiz plays in the holding midfield role.
