Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick led los Blancos into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey

    Iker Casillas

Restored to the starting lineup, and asked a convincing question as to why he was dropped in the first place. His stellar goalkeeping in the second half kept a dangerous Celta side at bay, and gave his team a platform to launch their late surge.

  • Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos Flop of the Match

Largely untroubled in the first half, and came close to registering a goal of his own with a well-hit free kick that flew just over the corner of the goal. Pushed out to right back in the second period, but his malicious side got the better of him, as he was sent off for a disgraceful kick out on Agusto.

  • Ricardo Carvalho

    Ricardo Carvalho

Spent a lot of the game pushed up near the halfway line, such was Celta`s lack of threat, especially in the first half. Run a little ragged after the break though, as the pace of the visitors attack caught up with him.

  • Arbeloa
    11

    3.00

    Arbeloa

In many ways, your typical Arbeloa display – decent in defence, while offering consistent, if not overly dynamic support in the attacking third.

  • Xabi Alonso

    Xabi Alonso

Sprayed a few tidy passes from deep in what was a comfortable first half for him. Withdrawn at half-time.

  • Luka Modric

    4.00

    Luka Modric

Thrived at times in midfield, as he found all kinds of space to pick his passes. Set up Ronaldo`s second goal with a superb ball over the top, and linked well with the rest of his team-mates.

  • Michael Essien

    2.50

    Michael Essien

Spent most of the opening period in offensive positions. Curbed his attacking instincts somewhat after switching to a central midfield role for the second half, but was bypassed a few times in the middle.

  • Mesut Özil

    Mesut Özil

Very difficult for the Celta defence to pick up as he drifted between the midfield and defensive lines with impunity. Accurate and decisive with his passes, and got himself into a few goalscoring positions as well.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

Cleaned up the occasional scraps in midfield, and generally did what was required of him. Happy to let his more offensively-minded team-mates do the heavy lifting in attack, but still managed to get forward with a few good runs from deep. Rounded off the scoring with a close range goal at the death.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo Top of the Match

He opened the scoring with a sublime long-range drive, made it 2-0 with a slick one-touch finish, and sealed the game with a clinical goal on the break. Once again, Ronaldo rose head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.

  • Karim Benzema
    12
    2
    2.50

    Karim Benzema

Led the line well for the home side, providing some solid link-up play, but missed a glorious chance to add his name to the scoresheet when Sergio denied him twice from close range.

Substitutions

  • Raphaël Varane

    Raphaël Varane

Generally acquitted himself well at the back after coming on, though the pace of Celta's attack in the second half saw him tested to his limit at times.

  • Ángel Di María

    Ángel Di María

Was not given enough time to make an impact from the bench.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Looked fresh when he entered the fray, and managed to get himself into a few good goalscoring positions.

  • Sergio

    2.50

    Sergio

Pulled off several fine saves in the first half, particularly from Benzema, but was ultimately unable to keep the dominant hosts at bay.

  • Gustavo Daniel Cabral

    2.50

    Gustavo Daniel Cabral

Caught ball-watching horribly for Ronaldo`s second, as the Portuguese was allowed all the time in the world to make a diagonal run across the defensive line. Never got to grips with the game, as Madrid`s attackers were able to find space time and again.

  • Bellvís
    0
    0
    3.00

    Bellvís

Hit or miss in defence, as some good work in the tackle was contrasted with a few glaring lapses in concentration, though the lack of communication across the backline played its part.

  • Andres Tuñez Arceo

    0
    2.00

    Andres Tuñez Arceo

As guilty as Cabral in the build-up to Ronaldo`s second goal, and struggled at times to contain the Blancos attack. A suspect defensive performance.

  • Hugo Mallo
    0
    0
    3.00

    Hugo Mallo

Failed to close down Ronaldo immediately before he struck the opener, and was withdrawn before half-time after his coach recognised his sub-standard performance.

  • Augusto Fernández
    0
    0
    3.00

    Augusto Fernández

After a quiet opening period, he came alive in the second half, with his searing pace and eye for goal a constant threat. Unlucky to see a couple of efforts thwarted by Casillas.

  • Jonathan Vila

    0
    2.50

    Jonathan Vila

Was overwhelmed by the energy and tenacity of the Madrid midfield and though he was brighter in the second period, it was a night he will wish to forget.

  • Alex López
    0
    0
    2.00

    Alex López

Fared worse than Vila in the centre of the park, as Madrid were able to run rings around him and completely control the game in his area of the pitch.

  • Chu-Young Park

    2.50

    Chu-Young Park

Came within inches of turning home a great cross by De Lucas, but aside from that he remained on the fringes of the game throughout.

  • Michael Krohn-Dehli
    0
    0
    3.00

    Michael Krohn-Dehli

Flat and uninspiring in the first half, but turned over a new leaf after the break, getting involved in the attack a lot more and working the ball into dangerous positions.

  • De Lucas
    0
    0
    3.00

    De Lucas

Drifted out to the flanks to great effect, twice firing in dangerous deliveries that the Celta attack failed to convert. Much better in the second half.

Substitutions

  • Vadim Demidov

    2.50

    Vadim Demidov

More solid than the player he replaced, Tunez, but still could not stem the tide of Madrid`s attack.

  • Roberto Lago

    3.00

    Roberto Lago

Efficient for much of the second half, but fell apart near the end, failing to track his runners on a few occasions.

  • Iago Aspas

    3.50

    Iago Aspas

Showcased a few exquisite touches on the ball, and gave his side another option up front.
