Maritzburg 0-0 Swallows: United advance after shoot-out
Maritzburg hold their nerve to win shoot-out against MTN8 champions
By Ian Malcolm
Maritzburg United have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Moroka Swallows at a wet Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, with Swallows edging the chances, but it was Maritzburg who held their nerve in the shoot-out to advance.
Swallows were almost ahead inside the first few minutes. Lefa Tsutsulupa picked up the loose ball on the right-hand side of the penalty-box and instead of crossing to a teammate, went for goal. His low effort had the beating of Shu-Aib Walters in the home goal, but not the post.
Swallows were the much brighter side in the opening period and Lerato Chabangu’s wicked free-kick cannoned off United defender Peter Petersen at the back post, with the ball deflecting narrowly wide of goal averting what would have been an embarrassing own goal.
Excellent play on the left wing between Bennett Chenene and Katlego Mashego set up a chance for the latter on the turn, but his goal-bound shot was brilliantly beaten away by Walters.
Mashego had an excellent opportunity to win it in the second half when he was set through on goal with just Walters to beat. The former Bafana Bafana striker seemed unsure whether to chip the keeper and shoot, and in the end he produced a weak effort that was easy for the keeper.
Maritzburg had a flurry of chances late on, Cuthbert Malajila missing his connection at the near post when well-placed and Philani Zulu then seeing his thunderous drive deflected just wide.
The match went to extra-time, where chances were few and far between, but the home side were almost gifted a goal when Etafia punched Delron Buckley’s free-kick into his own player and the ball went agonisingly wide of goal.
The game went to penalties and after Maritzburg and Swallows had both missed one each, The Birds’ Luvhengo Mungomeni put his effort against the post and it was the home side who celebrated their passage into the quarter-finals.
