Player Ratings: Ajax 1-4 Real Madrid

Goal.com rates the performers on show in the Primera Division champions' impressive victory at the Amsterdam ArenA

By Stefan Coerts

  • Kenneth Vermeer

    3.00

    Kenneth Vermeer

Showed his class early on to keep out shots from Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema within the space of two minutes. Could not do anything about either of Madrid's goals as he put in a good display.

  • Toby Alderweireld
    4
    5
    2.50

    Toby Alderweireld

Beaten way too easily by Benzema as the Frenchman provided the assist for the opener, and was unable to lead Ajax's back-line as he so desperately wants to.

  • Niklas Moisander

    2.00

    Niklas Moisander

The Finland international once more struggled defensively as he finds it difficult to adapt to the high pace at the top level. Looked lost as Ronaldo tapped home the first goal. Did help Ajax back in the game as he headed home a corner for 2-1.

  • Daley Blind
    3
    4
    3.00

    Daley Blind

Did a relatively good job against Callejon as the Spaniard was largely anonymous. Did not get involved too much in possession, but one of the few Ajax players who put in a sufficient performance.

  • Ricardo van Rhijn

    2.00

    Ricardo van Rhijn

Unsurprisingly, did not have an easy evening against Ronaldo and Kaka, who often drifted out wide. Showed courage, though, as he was not afraid to stick in a challenge, and charge forward whenever possible.

  • Christian Poulsen
    7
    3
    1.50

Christian Poulsen Flop of the Match

The veteran midfielder was far from impressive as he lost sight of Kaka way too often. To make matters worse, his passing was below par as he lacked accuracy. Replaced in the second half.

  • Christian Eriksen

    3
    2.00

    Christian Eriksen

Occasionally showed glimpses of his potential, but should do much more with his talent. Passing was too predictable and was sloppy in possession. Did get the assist for Ajax's consolation goal.

  • Siem de Jong
    4
    3
    2.00

    Siem de Jong

De Jong worked hard, but could not really make an impact as he was outplayed by Xabi Alonso. Almost levelled the scoring after Babel's cross in the 68th minute, but just failed to connect.

  • Tobias Sana
    4
    3
    1.50

    Tobias Sana

Has made an encouraging start in the Eredivisie, but once more disappointed in the Champions League. Did not offer anything at all in possession. Bullied off the ball way too easily in the 42nd minute, which led to Real's opener.

  • Derk Boerrigter
    4
    3
    2.00

    Derk Boerrigter

The left-winger was not afraid to try and take on Arbeloa down the left wing, but his decision making was unfortunate. Looked dangerous, but lacked a final ball.

  • Ryan Babel
    5
    6
    2.50

    Ryan Babel

Cut a frustrated figure as Ajax's lone striker in the first half. More lively after the interval and sent in a superb cross from the right that should have led to the equaliser at 2-1.

Made his Champions League debut in the second half.

  • Jody Lukoki

    Jody Lukoki

Came off the bench with 10 more minutes to go when the game was already decided.

  • Danny Hoesen

    Danny Hoesen

Came close to making a dream debut as he almost made it 2-2 with his first touch.

  • Iker Casillas
    13
    5
    3.00

    Iker Casillas

Did not have anything to do in the opening 45 minutes, but was not convincing when called upon after the break. Stayed on his line for the corner that led to the Ajax goal when he should have claimed the cross.

  • Pepe
    13
    4
    3.50

    Pepe

The powerful centre-back hardly set a foot wrong in defence. Won the majority of his duels and looked comfortable on the ball.

  • Sergio Ramos
    14
    3
    3.00

    Sergio Ramos

Ramos was hardly troubled by Babel before the break as the Dutchman had little support. Called into action more often after the introduction of Hoesen, but had little to worry about.

  • Marcelo
    17
    3
    3.00

    Marcelo

The wing-back had an easy evening against Sana as the Swede offered next to nothing on the ball. Happy to charge forward, and almost scored in the first half.

  • Arbeloa
    15
    3
    3.00

    Arbeloa

Arbeloa occasionally struggled against the enthusiastic Boerrigter, but always recovered well. Not much of a threat going forward, but solid overall.

  • Xabi Alonso
    16
    2
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

Had a relatively comfortable game in midfield against De Jong. Showed some nice and accurate passing and very strong positionally.

  • Michael Essien
    16
    9
    2.50

    Michael Essien

Given the nod ahead of Khedira and Modric, but did nothing to justify his inclusion. Outsmarted by Eriksen a few times, while he could not keep up physically, either. Deservedly hooked.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    28
    5
    5.00

Cristiano Ronaldo Top of the Match

Should have opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but was denied by Vermeer. Made amends later in the first half when he tapped home from close range, before netting two more in the second half. Simply outstanding.

  • Kaká
    32
    4
    3.50

    Kaká

The Brazilian midfielder was outstanding in the opening 45 minutes and came close to opening the scoring with a shot from inside the area. Excellent cross for Ronaldo later on. Dominated the midfield, before he was taken off after the break.

  • Karim Benzema
    18
    2
    4.00

    Karim Benzema

Largely anonymous in the first half until he showed his class with a superb run down the left that resulted in the opener. Then got a smile on Mourinho's face with a phenomenal finish, before providing yet another assist.

  • José Callejón
    9
    7
    2.50

    José Callejón

Netted twice against Ajax last year, but was unable to repeat that feat as he was largely anonymous. Replaced after the break with a minor knock.

Substitutions

  • Sami Khedira
    9
    3
    2.00

    Sami Khedira

Got an assist to his name during his 12 minutes on the pitch as he set up Ronaldo with a fine pass.

  • Mesut Özil
    11
    6
    2.00

    Mesut Özil

Came off the bench for Kaka late in the game, but did not see too much of the ball. More time on the bench could be on the cards for the German.

  • Ángel Di María
    12
    6
    3.00

    Ángel Di María

Replaced Callejon on the hour-mark and looked lively. Came close to adding his name to the score-sheet with a fine shot after cutting inside.
