  In quite superb form. Three times denied Gotze in the first half, twice in very quick succession, demonstrating superb anticipation. Constantly in demand in the second half and constantly responded. Perhaps could have got a stronger hand to Reus' opener but, in general, the last man whom City could blame for the result.

  Vincent Kompany

  Still lagging a little behind his totemic form of last season. The Belgian seems more sluggish than usual of late and this brought him a booking as he could only barge the pacy Reus over to stop him getting past. Will miss the Ajax game as a result.

  Came off the worse in the contest between him and Blaszczykowski and it was only a matter of time after Kolarov came on that he would be sacrificed should City need a goal, Balotelli replacing him for the final 10 minutes.

  Just as at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Serbian youngster looked more composed at the back than the somewhat-faltering Kompany but was still pulled around here and there by the visitors' movement. Let down by Rodwell for Reus' opener.

  Samir Nasri Flop of the Match

  With Dortmund often attacking more than the hosts, the Frenchman notably squandered one good opportunity to break because of his relative lack of pace, having to cut inside and hold play up instead. Never made an impression on the game and was replaced by the more direct Kolarov.

  Was starting to grow into the game more by the time he went off injured after just over half an hour. Had been somewhat overrun by Dortmund’s constantly pressing forward line early on.

  It is always a treat to watch the Spaniard make a pass and he picked some out on Wednesday of brilliant audacity and precision. If only he had passed into the net rather than awkwardly hoicked over from very close range in a late-first-half chance, the whole night could have been much better for his team.

  Relatively muted as Dortmund mostly bypassed the centre of midfield and attacked from wide instead. When he did get into the action, simply not as superhuman as usual. Yellow-carded and ineffective.

  Threatening on the counter for City, the Argentine also displayed some real strength, sometimes holding off as many as four opponents at one time. Didn't get enough service in the second half, though, as Dortmund's defenders started to bully him.

  Nearly as impressive between the sticks as Hart. Quite brilliant when rushing out to close down Aguero and made some excellent saves, particularly late to deny Argentine's powerful header. Endured a hairy moment dropping a relatively easy cross in the second half that wasn't punished, though.

  One or two awkward touches that could have brought serious punishment in defence but usually followed it up to doggedly win the ball back afterward. Not far away with a chest-down-and-shot in the first half. Very harshly conceded a penalty for an awful handball call - he could hardly have moved.

  Never exposed by Aguero as had been occasionally threatened but an awkward fall when trying to get on the end of an attacking set-piece put an end to his night as he went off injured in the second half.
