Given the start both sides have made to their respective domestic campaigns, Tuesday night’s Group F clash does not exactly have the makings of a classic.
Inconsistency has been a regular dish on Valencia’s plate, with two wins, two draws and two defeats recorded in their opening six league games, leaving them in 10th position in the table.
Their fortunes in Europe have fared little better either, with a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich far from an ideal start to their Champions League adventure for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.
In the away dressing room Rudi Garcia’s Lille side have considerable problems of their own.
Since beating Saint-Etienne in their first Ligue 1 encounter, Les Dogues have recorded just one more victory – a 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen which secured their place in the group stages of the competition.
Their 3-1 home defeat to BATE Borisov was arguably the biggest shock of the first round of fixtures and a 2-0 defeat to Rennes on Friday night leaves confidence in short supply ahead of their trip to Mestalla.
Garcia will make late checks on the fitness of attacking trio Salomon Kalou, Ronny Rodelin and Marvin Martin – who all missed the defeat to Rennes through injury – while Valencia will be without Ricardo Costa (calf strain), Jeremy Mathieu (Achilles), David Albelda (thigh), Sergio Canales (knee) and Pablo Piatti (arm).
