Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 2-1 Valencia

Goal.com rates the players on show as the Bundesliga outfit dominated at the Allianz Arena though a stoppage-time Nelson Valdez strike took the shine off of a solid three points

By Tom Webber

    Manuel Neuer

The Germany international will rarely have such a simple evening. He was not tested until the second half, denying Tino Costa and will have been livid that Valdez won the header in stoppage-time to rob him of a clean sheet.

  • Dante

    Dante Top of the Match

Composed and comfortable on the ball, Dante's impressive distribution was used to provide the building blocks for multiple Bayern attacks. He read the game well but was out-muscled by Feghouli far too easily.

  • Jerome Boateng

    Jerome Boateng

The Germany international had a relatively simple game in defence as Soldado did very little to cause him any problems. He mopped up any loose balls at the back in a competent outing.

  • Philipp Lahm

    Philipp Lahm

A decent night for the full-back though he failed to provide his usual attacking threat down the right-hand side. Defensively, he was solid but should perhaps should have used that to his team's advantage by pushing on.

  • Holger Badstuber

    3.50

    Holger Badstuber

Pushed forward on the left but was not overly adventurous. Nevertheless, he found plenty of space on the left and used it well to help knock the ball about and create spaces for the attack. Added an assist for Kroos in the second half.

  • Franck Ribéry

    Franck Ribéry

Turned and ran at defenders as soon as he got the ball, forcing Valencia to back pedal in a lively display. His continual pressing restricted Joao Pereira's forward movements and he frequently bested the Portuguese.

  • Javi Martínez

    2.50

    Javi Martínez

Acted as an important lynchpin as Bayern switched the play from left to right in their attempts to unlock the Valencia defence. By sitting deep he offered Schweinsteiger more freedom to attack which the midfielder used effectively.

  • Arjen Robben
    8
    3
    3.50

    Arjen Robben

Provided some very dangerous deliveries from out on the right though not all found a team-mate. He continually offered a threat, particularly when cutting in onto his left and ended the game with an assist.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger

    3
    3.50

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Regularly ventured forward to join the attack with runs from deep, something which led to the game's first goal. He used the ball well in the middle and hardly put a foot wrong throughout.

  • Toni Kroos
    12
    2
    4.00

    Toni Kroos

Always seemed to pop up in extremely dangerous areas in the final third, utilising the space well and proving a real nuisance to Valencia. Stung the palms of Diego Alves on a couple of occasions before scoring an absolute corker.

  • Claudio Pizarro
    4
    6
    2.50

    Claudio Pizarro

Things just did not seem to go the Peruvians way on the night as his touch was off and he often seemed to be a step behind the play. Given the opportunity, he failed to lead the line similarly to Mandzukic or Gomez.

Substitutions

  • Luiz Gustavo
    4
    4
    2.50

    Luiz Gustavo

Replaced Javi Martinez with 20 minutes remaining but Bayern remained sloppy in the centre of the park, giving away the ball all too easily.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    5
    7
    2.50

    Mario Mandzukic

Failed to continue his excellent early season form after replacing Pizarro in the second half. He missed a great chance to score Bayern's third in stoppage time with an awful penalty.

  • Thomas Müller
    6
    3
    3.00

    Thomas Müller

Struggled to have the expected impact in the second half as his side's ball retention diminished. Cissokho also upped his game after the break to deny the German as much freedom as he would have liked.

  • Diego Alves
    6
    0
    3.50

    Diego Alves

The Brazilian keeper showed himself to be an excellent shot-stopper once more as he denied Schweinsteiger and Kroos from distance. Could do nothing about the latter's goal but saved a penalty in the final minutes.

  • Aly Cissokho
    4
    0
    3.00

    Aly Cissokho

Allowed Robben to cut inside onto his favoured left foot far too easily but fortunately the Dutchman rarely made the most of it. Upped his game after the break, dealing with Muller and bombing on to join the attack.

  • Adil Rami
    5
    0
    1.50

    Adil Rami

Kept Pizarro quiet during the striker's hour-long stint but was needlessly reckless in the challenge on numerous occasions. Lacked professionalism as he brought down Robben in stoppage time, conceding a penalty and seeing red.

  • João Pereira
    6
    0
    2.50

    João Pereira

The Portuguese loves to get forward but he was unable to for the vast majority as Ribery gave him a lot to think about. He was perhaps beaten too easily at times and enabled Bayern to dominate in the wide areas.

  • Jose Andrés Guardado
    5
    0
    2.00

    Jose Andrés Guardado

Was almost invisible down the left as he could offer nothing to his side in the opposing half but was equally ineffectual in defence. Provided Cissokho with little cover in a disappointing Champions League debut.

  • Ricardo Costa
    4
    0
    3.00

    Ricardo Costa

Was relatively solid at the back as Bayern posed minimal threat in their strikers. He performed well in the air and his positioning was good, enabling him to make some key interceptions.

  • Sofiane Feghouli
    4
    0
    1.50

    Sofiane Feghouli

Two disappointing moments ended up having a pivotal outcome on the result. He failed to test Neuer midway through the second half when he should have scored, before losing the ball ahead of Kroos' strike.

  • Parejo
    3
    1
    1.50

    Parejo

Could get nowhere near the ball in the middle of the park and was forced to run around the midfield with very little aim. Did not see enough of the ball to use his wide array of passes as Valencia struggled to hold possession.

  • Tino Costa
    3
    1
    2.00

    Tino Costa

Gave the ball away in the middle of the park a few too many times but improved in the second half. He cannot have the devastating impact that he as capable of when played so far back though and cut a frustrated figure.

  • Jonas
    4
    0
    1.50

    Jonas Flop of the Match

Failed to offer anything to his side as they had minimal possession throughout. He got behind the ball when his side were under pressure and chased it down, but that is not what you want a key goal threat to do.

  • Roberto Soldado
    5
    0
    2.00

    Roberto Soldado

The Spain international will have been hugely frustrated by the lack of service he received. He was incredibly isolated in attack but for all his efforts a chance never came his way. He chased the defenders but there was little else he could do.

Substitutions

  • Barragán

    Barragán

Came on in the 88th minute and could have no impact on the match.

  • Jonathan Viera

    Jonathan Viera

Looked out of sorts initially but more than atoned with a wonderful cross that was headed home by Valdez in stoppage time.

  • Haedo Valdéz

    3.00

    Haedo Valdéz

Performed far better than Jonas had up alongside Soldado as he refused to give the Bayern defenders space. Showed great determination to nod in a consolation strike for his side.
