Kaizer Chiefs’ unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership has come to an end after a 2-0 loss to Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The loss has allowed AmaKhosi’s Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates to move within a point of them in the table as their once commanding lead has slowly been eroded in recent weeks.

Stars themselves have moved up to third, five points behind Chiefs, and perhaps this result will end the debate over whether they should be considered title contenders this season.

That is largely true too by the nature of the win, comfortable and from a side oozing confidence in front of their own fans.

Goals from Henrico Botes and Mogakolodi Ngele in the opening 25 minutes were enough to seal the victory, while the former also hit the crossbar later on.

Botes had Stars ahead on 16 minutes as he supplied a fine finish from Thuso Phala’s pass to net his third goal in six games. It was a deserved lead for Stars, who had been bright in the opening period.

And it got better for them on 25 minutes when the excellent Ngele added a second, blasting the ball home, via a deflection, from the edge of the area after being teed-up by Tintswalo Tshabalala.

It was a fabulous strike from a player who is becoming known for scoring spectacular goals, and his second since arriving from Township Rollers in Botswana at the start of the season.

Stars almost had a third in first half injury-time when Botes’ spectacular overhead-kick struck the crossbar and bounced away to safety.

Chiefs had chances to come back into the game in the second period, halftime substitute Kingston Nkhatha having a number of those, but a combination of wayward finishing and good goalkeeping from Siyabonga Mpontshane kept them at bay.
