Sander Westerveld puts in a heroic performance for Ajax to keep the score down

Free State Stars have moved in to the top half of the Absa Premiership table with a 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday night.

Goals from Luyolo Nomandela and Sadat Ouro-Akoriko were enough to seal the points for Ea Lla Koto, while Granwald Scott briefly equalised for the Urban Warriors.

The visitors were lively in the opening 20 minutes, Nhlanhla Shabalala and Toriq Losper shooting over and straight at Kennedy Mweene respectively.

But having soaked up the pressure, the home side took the lead after a mistake from Sander Westerveld in the Ajax goal.

Dove Wome fed Nomandela and his shot should really have been kept out by Westerveld. But the Dutch keeper let the ball through his grasp and Ea Lla Koto celebrated the lead.

Ajax fought back to level though, Granwald Scott converting a Lebohang Manyama cross on 28 minutes.

Westerveld made up for his earlier mistake with an excellent save to deny Wome, tipping his shot around the post.

The home side were piling on the pressure just before the break and Ajax finally wilted on the stroke of halftime. Big Togolese centre-back Ouro-Akoriko drilling the ball home as Ajax failed to clear.

The second half saw Westerveld make a number of outstanding saves to keep a rampant home side at bay.

The first was from Wome, before Nomandela was the next to test the Dutchman. The latter then forced a remarkable stop as Westerveld turned his goal-bound shot round the post once more. Paulus Masehe then got in on the act, but Westerveld was again up to the task.

Stars now look forward to an away trip to Orlando Pirates on Saturday, while Ajax will host Black Leopards on Sunday.
