Leopards 0 - Stars 1: Platinum Stars up to third after excellent away win at Leopards

Leopards 0 - Stars 1: Platinum Stars up to third after excellent away win at Leopards

Hail storm briefly halts play, but cannot stop Dikwena recording fourth straight win

New Black Leopards coach Ian Palmer has tasted defeated in his first game in charge after Lidoda Duvha were beaten 1-0 by Platinum Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Palmer had hoped for a change of fortune for the side, but it was mush of the same for them, an inability to score goals and some lax defending meaning they went home empty handed again.

Henrico Botes scored the decisive goal of the game early on, and despite the players having to leave the field for 20 minutes or so following a violent hail storm, Dikwena were able to hold on for the win that takes them up to third in the table.

Stars started the brighter and were ahead inside six minutes. Vuyo Mere’s cross was converted by Botes, his second of the season.

There followed shots at either end from Mahlatse Maake for Leopards and Mogakolodi Ngele for Stars, but both efforts drifted wide.

A ferocious hail storm sent the players scuttling from the field just past the half-hour mark and will have instilled a sense of déjà vu in Lidoda Duvha, who have already had one match abandoned this season due to hail against Kaizer Chiefs.

It was touch and go whether the play would be able to resume, but mercifully the weather lifted and they were able to get back on the park.

Soon after the restart of play, Mongezi Bobe crashed a free-kick against the crossbar as Stars rode their luck a little, while in the second period visiting goalkeeper Sitabonga Mpontshane saved from Raymond Monama.

But Stars were able to comfortably hold on for the win that lifts them into the top three, heady heights for a club that has battled in recent seasons.

Their next match is at home to BidVest Wits on Saturday afternoon, while Leopards must travel to Cape Town to meet Ajax.
