Ajax Cape Town host Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday in an all important PSL clash between two sides which need to recover from their early season disappointments and kick-start their respective campaigns.
It could be named as the clash of the "crisis clubs" as Sundowns and Ajax have certainly experienced quite a few difficulties this season, after only seven games into the campaign.
Both clubs have had to deal with unhappy supporters – with Sundowns fans baying for Johan Neeskens blood, while Maarten Stekelenburg was unable to survive the wrath of dissatisfied supporters and Ajax Cape Town’s board.
Ajax is still gripped in uncertainty regarding who will be coaching the Urban Warriors for the rest of this season, as a feud between the two family factions controlling the club has delayed the final decision.
This lack of certainty may spill over to the players as the club’s coaching future hangs in the balance. Ajax’s lacklustre displays this season have been due to their lack of the finishing touch and a general loss of confidence on the pitch.
There have been no signs of this confidence being regained, save for their last PSL victory, a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers AmaZulu. Their recent Telkom Knockout loss against Supersport United would have left a bitter taste in the players’ mouths as they were knocked out after a penalty shoot-out.
Sundowns will have been lifted by their 1 – 0 victory over AmaTuks in the Telkom Knockout and their goal scorer Anthony Laffor believes the talented side has regained momentum.
"A win in any form is always good for a team who are looking to get back to winning ways, and I know we will travel to Cape Town with a better chance of recording another win,” the Liberian international told the club’s official website.
“All we need to do is continue where we left off and translate what we do at training to the match.”
Johan Neeskens will hope his side can translate their cup form into the league, as he continues to survive at the club. His players are beginning to believe in themselves once again and merely need to bring their confidence and momentum into the match on Saturday.
