Player Ratings: Barcelona 5-1 Athletic Bilbao

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at Camp Nou as the Blaugrana were simply too good for the Basques, dominating from start to finish

    Víctor Valdés

A little weak for the goal, but otherwise had very little to do. A desperate shot from Gomez late on was his first real save.

  • Piqué

    Piqué

Scored the first goal of the game with an opportunistic rebound, and could have had a second late on had he elected to shoot rather than pass after a great run out of defence. Did what he had to do in defence with little fuss.

  • Jordi Alba

    Jordi Alba

Not at his marauding best today, but still managed to support the attack effectively, and defend relatively solidly on his side of the back line.

  • Adriano

    Adriano

Did not miss a beat filling in for Dani Alves on the right side of defence, constantly overlapping and looking to get in threatening positions in the attacking third. His third goal, a confident finish after a great run from deep, was just reward for his performance.

  • Cesc Fàbregas

    Cesc Fàbregas

Heavily involved in the attack, he was superb in his movement from deeper positions to give his team an avenue forward. Had a few tries at goal, with only the alertness of Iraizoz denying him a goal in the first half. Still, he set up Adriano’s strike on the stroke of half time with a quickly released through pass, before finally getting his goal with a cool finish.

  • Xavi

    Xavi

Facilitated the attack superbly from deep, keeping the ball moving from left to right, getting everyone a touch on the ball. Bilbao let up their pressure in midfield after the initial exchanges, so he was never given a stern test for most of the game, and allowed the time and space he needed to dictate proceedings.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Quite simply magnificent, as his raw technique when running with the ball was a sight to behold. Showed his customary ability to wriggle out of the tightest of spaces, and some of his link up play was a joy to watch. The only blot on his performance was a bad miss from close range in the first half.

  • Javier Mascherano

    Javier Mascherano

Completed what was required of him, but not really given much to think about by Bilbao.

  • Busquets

    Busquets

Was not required to fulfil too many defensive tasks today, but still mopped up effectively in front of the defence, while recycling possession in his usually efficient manner when Barca needed to reset their attack. One key recovery of the ball set the events of Barca’s fourth goal in motion.

  • Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi Top of the Match

Moved to within one goal of Muller's record with another superb display. His first had an element of luck about it - and could have well been ruled an own goal - but his second was pure class, a confident finish with his right foot. Simply unstoppable once he gets in full flow.

  • Pedro

    Pedro

Did not always seem himself today, as on different occasions, his first touch and shooting let him down. Rather overshadowed by the scintillating form of the rest of the Barcelona offensive players. Still put in a good spell of effort to assist Messi's second though.

One or two good runs from deep, and was not really tested defensively.

A few good moments on the ball after his introduction off the bench.

  • Alex Song

    Alex Song

Not much to do after coming on - seemed more interested in getting forward.

  • Iraizoz

    2.00

    Iraizoz

Made a few good saves from Fabregas and Messi shots, but was a little shoddy with his handling of the ball, costing his side a goal.

  • Aurtenetxe

    Aurtenetxe

Given the slip numerous times by Adriano out wide, and simply could not keep up with the pace of the Barca attack.

  • Amorebieta

    Amorebieta

An ugly clearance helped a Messi shot over the line and he never recovered, looking nervy whenever he was faced with a challenge.

  • Borja Ekiza

    Borja Ekiza

Like the rest of the defence, he had no answer for Barca's play in the offensive third and was beaten numerous times.

  • Ramalho

    Ramalho

Torn left and right by Iniesta and Messi, and was left helpless on the right side of defence. An easy obstacle to bypass.

  • Iturraspe

    Iturraspe

Did well to clip to Gomez for the lone Bilbao goal, but otherwise, failed to inspire much in the middle of the park.

  • Susaeta

    2.50

    Susaeta

Gave his team precious little out on the right wing, as he never had close to enough service to make a difference. Isolated and frustrated.

  • Ander Herrera

    2.50

    Ander Herrera

Apart from one crucial last-man tackle to stop Messi, he contributed nothing of note and was little more than a passenger in midfield.

  • Óscar De Marcos

    Óscar De Marcos

Left chasing shadows in vain time and time again as Barca were simply too dynamic in the middle of the park for him to get a look in.

  • Ibai Gómez

    3.50

    Ibai Gómez

Scored the only goal for Bilbao with a cool finish, and was the lone outlet of attacking quality for the visitors. Had the rest of the team matched his performance, Bilbao would have definitely been closer.

  • Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia

Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia Flop of the Match

Restored to the starting line-up, but contributed absolutely nothing before his withdrawal from the field.

    Fernando Llorente

One or two decent moments holding up the ball, but missed the target on his only attempt.
