Player Ratings: Schalke 0-2 Bayern Munich

Goal.com casts a studious eye over the performers at the Veltins Arena, as a quick-fire double in the second half saw the Bavarians claim all three points

    Lars Unnerstall

Hung out to dry by his defence for both goals, but made one clutch save on Robben to prevent a third.

  • Benedikt Höwedes

    Benedikt Höwedes

Did a good job of limiting the influence of Arjen Robben, especially in the first half. He did appear a bit disheartened by the two goals allowed after the break, though, and did not defend with the same conviction as before.

  • Kyriakos Papadopoulos

    2.50

    Kyriakos Papadopoulos

The Greek defender seemed on his way to matching his fine performance during the midweek win over Olympiakos, but was stunned by Bayern’s five-minute salvo in the second half, and let his play suffer as a result.

  • Christian Fuchs
    2

    1.50

    Christian Fuchs

It was a decent game for him up until the 58th minute, but all that anyone will remember is the humiliating, playground-style nutmeg Muller pulled off on him en route to scoring Bayern’s second goal.

  • Joel Matip

Joel Matip Flop of the Match

Did not always appear settled dealing with spells of intense Bayern pressure, and was left on his backside as he tried, in vain, to stop Kroos from working his way into the box to score the opener. He could have been a lot quicker to get a tackle in on Muller moments before the second, too.

  • Lewis Holtby
    5
    6
    1.50

    Lewis Holtby

He put in a good shift against Olympiakos midweek, but the step up in quality to the Bayern midfield appeared to be too much for him. Left chasing shadows on more than one occasion as he was hauled off in the second half.

  • Jermaine Jones
    3
    7
    2.50

    Jermaine Jones

Threw himself about in his typically aggressive manner, but was often bypassed in midfield. Involved in a silly tussle with Robben in the second half.

  • Julian Draxler
    8
    5
    2.00

    Julian Draxler

Missed a glorious opportunity, heading over the bar from point-blank range. His enterprise on the flanks was rather limited, and he was subbed early in the second after drifting to the periphery of the game.

  • Roman Neustädter
    2
    7
    2.50

    Roman Neustädter

Was always eager to harry Bayern in possession, but at times, he was overrun in the middle of the park, especially when Bayern looked to break.

  • Jefferson Agustin Farfán
    11
    6
    3.50

    Jefferson Agustin Farfán

The best avenue forward for the hosts. His pace out wide was the biggest problem for Bayern to deal with, and he was able to whip in his fair share of dangerous deliveries, both from crosses and set-pieces.

  • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
    11
    8
    2.50

    Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Never found much space, or had much service, to get a clear sight on goal, but he did give the Bayern defence a lot to think about with his movement.

Substitutions

  • Ibrahim Afellay

    Ibrahim Afellay

Looked smooth in possession and his first touch was a joy to watch.

  • Marco Höger

    Marco Höger

Injected a little bit of energy for the hosts in his spell off the bench.

  • Tranquillo Barnetta

    Tranquillo Barnetta

Did not see a whole lot of the ball after coming on as a substitute.

  • Manuel Neuer
    43
    2
    3.00

    Manuel Neuer

Relatively comfortable outing, but was alert to twice deny Farfan with a pair of excellent saves.

  • Dante
    34
    3
    3.00

    Dante

His man-marking stood out, as he showed a good deal of concentration to stick close to Huntelaar throughout the match, denying the dangerous forward several sights of goal.

  • Jerome Boateng
    29
    12
    2.50

    Jerome Boateng

Not always the most convincing performer in defence, as he seemed to be scrambling far too often to get across and confront his man. One careless giveaway to Draxler almost cost his team dear, but his fellow defenders were able to cover his mistake.

  • Philipp Lahm
    38
    6
    3.00

    Philipp Lahm

As ever, he got forward well to provide a good outlet out wide on the right, and kept up his duties in his own half of the field, getting back well and making it hard for Schalke to find a way through.

  • Holger Badstuber
    32
    10
    2.50

    Holger Badstuber

With Heynckes continuing with the Boateng-Dante partnership in the centre of defence, Badstuber was shunted out to the left flank once again, but looked a little dubious with his positioning at times, as the majority of Schalke’s danger came down his side.

  • Arjen Robben
    43
    8
    3.50

    Arjen Robben

Started the match looking lethargic in possession, but his fortunes improved after the break as he was increasingly able to stretch the Schalke backline with his speed and dribbling ability.

  • Luiz Gustavo Dias
    32
    5
    3.00

    Luiz Gustavo Dias

Generally took care of things in the middle in his typically energetic fashion. Always looked to harry his direct opponent into coughing up possession and was usually quick to track back and cover for his more attack minded team-mates.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    43
    7
    3.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Probably Bayern’s most composed player in the attacking third of the field, as he set a good deal of attacks in motion with his accurate passing. Was able to position himself well to support his team-mates anytime they found themselves under too much pressure with the ball.

  • Toni Kroos
    51
    6
    4.00

    Toni Kroos

Another mature performance in midfield from Kroos. His distribution was as accurate as ever, and he dovetailed extremely well with Muller to score the opener. Fashioned many chances for his side throughout.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    38
    14
    3.50

    Mario Mandzukic

Though he did not get his name on the scoresheet, and he missed a glorious chance from point-blank range, Mandzukic’s impact came from his hold-up play and his general presence inside the box, creating space for others to exploit.

  • Thomas Müller
    53
    10
    4.50

Thomas Müller Top of the Match

Busy and active in the attacking third, providing lots or penetration, but it seemed set to be one of those games where the end product just would not come off. However, he exploded into life in the second half, setting up Kroos for the opener with a smart run and pass, before scoring himself thanks to an outrageous nutmeg on Fuchs.

Substitutions

  • Javi Martínez
    39
    7
    3.00

    Javi Martínez

Looked lively and energetic in his spell off the bench, and came close to turning home a rebound from a Robben free kick.
