  The Greek defender seemed on his way to matching his fine performance during the midweek win over Olympiakos, but was stunned by Bayern’s five-minute salvo in the second half, and let his play suffer as a result.

  It was a decent game for him up until the 58th minute, but all that anyone will remember is the humiliating, playground-style nutmeg Muller pulled off on him en route to scoring Bayern’s second goal.

  Did not always appear settled dealing with spells of intense Bayern pressure, and was left on his backside as he tried, in vain, to stop Kroos from working his way into the box to score the opener. He could have been a lot quicker to get a tackle in on Muller moments before the second, too.

  He put in a good shift against Olympiakos midweek, but the step up in quality to the Bayern midfield appeared to be too much for him. Left chasing shadows on more than one occasion as he was hauled off in the second half.

  The best avenue forward for the hosts. His pace out wide was the biggest problem for Bayern to deal with, and he was able to whip in his fair share of dangerous deliveries, both from crosses and set-pieces.

  Not always the most convincing performer in defence, as he seemed to be scrambling far too often to get across and confront his man. One careless giveaway to Draxler almost cost his team dear, but his fellow defenders were able to cover his mistake.

  As ever, he got forward well to provide a good outlet out wide on the right, and kept up his duties in his own half of the field, getting back well and making it hard for Schalke to find a way through.

  With Heynckes continuing with the Boateng-Dante partnership in the centre of defence, Badstuber was shunted out to the left flank once again, but looked a little dubious with his positioning at times, as the majority of Schalke’s danger came down his side.

  Started the match looking lethargic in possession, but his fortunes improved after the break as he was increasingly able to stretch the Schalke backline with his speed and dribbling ability.

  Generally took care of things in the middle in his typically energetic fashion. Always looked to harry his direct opponent into coughing up possession and was usually quick to track back and cover for his more attack minded team-mates.

  Probably Bayern’s most composed player in the attacking third of the field, as he set a good deal of attacks in motion with his accurate passing. Was able to position himself well to support his team-mates anytime they found themselves under too much pressure with the ball.

  Another mature performance in midfield from Kroos. His distribution was as accurate as ever, and he dovetailed extremely well with Muller to score the opener. Fashioned many chances for his side throughout.

  Though he did not get his name on the scoresheet, and he missed a glorious chance from point-blank range, Mandzukic’s impact came from his hold-up play and his general presence inside the box, creating space for others to exploit.

  Busy and active in the attacking third, providing lots or penetration, but it seemed set to be one of those games where the end product just would not come off. However, he exploded into life in the second half, setting up Kroos for the opener with a smart run and pass, before scoring himself thanks to an outrageous nutmeg on Fuchs.
