It is another familiar meeting between the two countries as Ghana fight for the top spot in Group D in order to book a place at the next stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars are competing with Zambia for the sole ticket in the group. Sudan’s ability to pick just a point out of a possible nine puts them completely far away from qualifying and their thoughts now should be how to end their consistent defeats to the Black Stars.

Can they dent Ghana’s hopes?

It is a huge question which could be answered on the grounds of history and current happenings. Ghana have won their last two matches against Sudan on the homesoil of their opponents in the 2010 World Cup and the 2013 Afcon qualifiers. Also, the recent clash between the two sides ended in a comfortable 4-0 win for the four-time African champions in Kumasi. If that is anything to go by, then Sudan must be bracing up for another trouble.

However, the 1970 African champions defied all odds to beat the 2012 Afcon champions, Zambia 2-0 at home, only to be stripped off the points for using an unqualified player. Their performance against the Chipolopolo is a proof that Kwesi Appiah’s men must not rest on their laurels if they want to leave Omdurman unscathed. Sudan coach, Abdallah knows his team were not too bad in their 4-0 defeat to Ghana in the first leg. They had a good chemistry, and that is evident from the fact that all the players are raised from the domestic league, especially from Al Hilal and AL Marriekh.

Ghana’s build-up has been hit with injuries with the likes of Abdul Majid Waris, Emmanuel Frimpong, Adams Kwarasey and Isaac Vorsah all missing out. But the red-hot form of captain, Asamoah Gyan at club level couple with his good away performances for Ghana must be good news to Kwesi Appiah. The likes of Rabiu Mohammed and John Boye have had great campaigns in France this season and they will obviously be counted on. Sudan cannot boast of stand-out players like Ghana but the pool of players from two clubs (Al Marriekh and Al Hilal) could be a weapon.
  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Ghana beat Sudan 4-0 in the first leg in Kumasi.
  • The Black Stars have a far better head-to-head record against the Falcons of Jediane.
  • The match was initially scheduled for Khartoum, but has been moved to Omdurman due to floodlight issues.
  • Sudan have never qualified for the World Cup.
  • Sudan are placed at the bottom of the Group D table.
  • Asamoah Gyan will join Abedi Pele as the country’s highest scorer if the UAE-based player finds the back of the net
