Moroka Swallows started off their campaign with a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night

Orlando Pirates came into this league opener brimming with confidence having convincingly won their previous encounter at the same venue last week Saturday.

However, it was Moroka Swallows who settled much quicker than the home side and they kept Pirates on their toes from the word go.

Luvhengo Mungomeni took advantage of Thabo Matlaba's attacking prowess in the 5th minute and played a six-yard cross to Vuyisile Wana, but the former Santos forward failed to hit the target with his attempt.

Three minutes later, Latshene Phalane then put Moroka Swallows in front with a powerful shot that came off Siyabonga Sangweni to wrong foot Senzo Meyiwa and into the back of the net.

Pirates started playing their normal brand of football, with Matlaba often in the opposition half, but it was Mpho Makola who came close to netting the equaliser in the 15th minute, hitting the crossbar with a long range shot.

Kermit Erasmus should have levelled matters on the half-hour mark after beating the offside trap from a Daine Klate pass, but the diminutive striker guided his attempt wide with only Greg Etafia to beat.

The home side then won a penalty after Erasmus was brought down by Rudi Isaacs inside the box in the 34th minute, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Oupa Manyisa stepped up and calmly converted to make it 1-1, much to the delight of the Pirates fans out in the stands.

Pirates could have scored at least two more goals afterwards, but their attackers lacked composure in front of goal and had to settle for a 1-1 scoreline at the end of the first 45 minutes.

Makola wasted a glorious chance to make it 2-1 to Pirates in the 55th minute as he could only guide his attempt over the top from close range after he was brilliantly spotted by Erasmus.

Klate's free-kick came off the framework in the 66th minute as Pirates continued to search for their second goal of the game, and their first from open play.

Erasmus was again wasteful and this time he fired his left-foot effort straight onto Etafia, who made himself big enough to make a fantastic stop.

Bucs then paid a heavy price with less than 10 minutes remaining, as Lerato Chabangu dribbled past three of their defenders before firing past Meyiwa to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Swallows then held on to their lead to upset their fierce rivals in their own backyard to start the season on a high note, despite having lost all their pre-season matches.
