Ajax Cape Town 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs: Urban Warriors punish defensive Chiefs side

A late goal from Morris helped the Urban Warriors defeat the mighty AmaKhosi in a match played at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday

Ajax Cape Town were quick to settle, and launched their first attack inside the opening two minutes of the game, but Itumeleng Khune reacted the quickest to deny Eleazer Rodgers.

Telinho Ernesto got himself in a promising position in the 6th minute, but he blasted his shot across the face of Khune’s goal, as Ajax looked for an early goal.

Chiefs did get shots at goal, but their best chance came towards the 15th minute when Dominic Isaacs brought Bernard Parker down outside the box, but Siphiwe Tshabalala’s attempt from the free-kick went straight into Jaakkola’s hands.

Ajax came close to breaking the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Rodgers’ smartly taken effort came off the upright before being cleared by Morgan Gould.

Chiefs then started dominating possession, with Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Tshabalala lively in the AmaKhosi midfield, but the PSL champions couldn’t create any goalscoring chances as they lacked numbers in the final half.

Both teams started the second half with high tempo, and although Chiefs had the better of Ajax in the early stages, they couldn’t create any clear-cut chances.

Ernesto and Hlatshwayo always made things look easier for the Urban Warriors especially on the right hand side, but nothing came out of their efforts.

On 72 minutes, Eric Mathoho’s header narrowly sailed over the bar from Tshabalala’s out swinging corner, as the Chiefs fans wanted Stuart Baxter to make changes.

Ajax came from nowhere to score a late goal in the 87th minute through Tashreeq Morris’ powerful header after being set-up by Keegan Dolly, and that was the end of it as Ajax collected all the three points against AmaKhosi.
