MP Black Aces 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs: AmaKhosi begin title defence with a win

Bernard Parker’s only goal of the game was enough to give AmaKhosi all three points against Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday night

Kaizer Chiefs got off to a flying start and they were 1-0 up just under 5 minutes through Bernard Parker who created space for himself before firing home from Siphiwe Tshabalala’s pass.

AmaKhosi continued to enjoy possession and should have won a penalty in the 8th minute after Knowledge Musona was clearly brought down inside the Aces box, but the referee waved play on.

Omar Hendricks then tried from distance as Aces looked to bounce back, but the defender’s shot sailed over the bar.

Aces struggled with possession and their attacks were cut short by the Chiefs defence, as Khune continued to have a quiet game.

Chiefs won a free-kick outside the Aces box in the 26th minute after Musona was pulled by Eduardo Ferreira, but the PSL champions failed to double their lead from that position.

Method Mwanjale had to clear Tefu Mashamaite’s powerful header off the line after a well played out-swinging corner by Tshabalala.

The home side had their first real shot on target on 41 minutes following Mabhuti Khenyeza’s brilliantly taken shot from outside the Chiefs box, but Khune showed his class as he parried for a corner.

Khenyeza was at it again on the stroke of halftime, but he could not hit the target this time around as Chiefs held on to their lead in the first 45 minutes.

AmaKhosi started the second half like a house on fire, and it was Tshabalala who ran with the ball from the midfield into the Aces box in the 47th minute, but the AmaZayoni defence recovered in time to block for Chiefs’ first corner of the second half.

Aces caught Chiefs with a counter moments later, and it was Abia Nale who ran from his own half, but the former Chiefs midfielder was let down by his final touch.

Lehlohonolo Majoro came close in the 53rd minute when he surged into the Aces box, but Bafana Nhlapho produced a fine save to keep Aces in the game.

The game lost its tempo afterwards as Aces gave the Chiefs strikers no space in front of Nhlapho’s goals and Chiefs on the other hand, were solid at the back until after the 70th minute.

Musona forced Nhlapho to a brilliant save in the 72nd minute as AmaKhosi looked to put the game beyond Aces’ reach.

Aces nearly levelled matters with 12 minutes to play, but Khenyeza’s volley was comfortably saved by the Chiefs goalkeeper Khune.

Khune pulled off a great save with his leg in the dying minutes of the game after a deflected shot from substitute Dennis Masina.

Chiefs had their penalty appeal turned down a few minutes later after Parker was brought down in the Aces box, but AmaKhosi still managed to walk away with maximum points.
