Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-0 Manchester City

Ex-Manchester United man Phil Bardsley sealed an amazing personal turnaround as he struck the winner to condemn the visitors to a fourth successive single-goal defeat on Wearside

    Vito Mannone

Assured in his handling, and his confidence permeated throughout the defence. Dealt with everything City had to throw at him effectively.

Phil Bardsley Top of the Match

Took his goal like a seasoned forward but his defensive contribution on the left was every bit as impressive. Helped stifle Richards and Milner but the energy he showed in getting up for the goal and to support Johnson was great to see.

  • Wes Brown

    Wes Brown

First Premier League start in 22 months but it did not show. His speculative yet controlled pass found Bardsley for the opener and he was dogged in his work at the back too.

  • Ondřej Čelůstka

    Ondřej Čelůstka

Has come on leaps and bounds from his early appearances. Looked to get up in support of Giaccherini down the right without surrendering too much space for City to counter on him.

  • John O'Shea
    15
    4
    4.00

    John O'Shea

Marshalled his defensive unit superbly, cajoling those around him into position and help keeping a watertight line that City struggled to find a gap in.

  • Sung-Yong Ki

    3.50

    Sung-Yong Ki

Neat, tidy but also hard-working in the midfield engine room. Kept things simple, never let himself be dragged out of the midfield base where he was situated but occasionally his final ball let him down.

  • Sebastian Larsson
    14

    3.00

    Sebastian Larsson

His delivery from wide positions and general ball retention fits the mould of play Poyet is attempting to integrate at the Stadium of Light. One first-half cross was squandered by Fletcher but the Swede was slightly lucky to escape with no punishment for a reckless lunge on Garcia.

  • Adam Johnson
    12
    5
    3.00

    Adam Johnson

Looked fired up against his former employers and City could not handle his weaving runs and trickery on the left flank. Like Ki, though, would have benefitted from supplying a better pass from good positions.

  • Jack Colback

    3.50

    Jack Colback

The ultimate utility man occupied a central midfield berth and helped to pull the strings for a Sunderland midfield. Took great pleasure in getting in the face of Yaya Toure and did so convincingly.

  • Emanuele Giaccherini
    13
    5
    2.50

    Emanuele Giaccherini

A strangely peripheral figure for the hosts but showed his class and dictated the game on his own terms albeit fleetingly in one of his least exciting Sunderland displays to date.

  • Steven Fletcher

    Steven Fletcher

Proving a real battering ram of a forward for Sunderland but offers so much more. The elegance and grace in some of his flick-ons and lay-offs left the Sunderland fans in a round of applause on occasions. Worked tirelessly, too.

Substitutions

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

Tigerish in the midfield battle and it reflected in his peers' performance levels, as they found another gear to pull through and secure another famous win over City.

  • Jozy Altidore

    3.00

    Jozy Altidore

Like-for-like swap with Fletcher as he provided a physical focal point for his side to hit on the break as City launched everything at the home side.

  • Fabio Borini
    10

    2.50

    Fabio Borini

Was introduced for the final exchanges and could not get on the ball.

  • Costel Pantilimon

    6
    2.50

    Costel Pantilimon

May feel he could have done better for the goal, perhaps going down slightly too early to deal with Bardsley's finish but was otherwise prompt off his line to deal with the hosts' counter attacking threat and was solid with his kicking.

  • Micah Richards
    5
    10
    2.50

    Micah Richards

Looked out of sorts as Sunderland cashed in with the opening goal after he went AWOL. Zabaleta's presence on the bench seemed like it would be costly and the Argentinian was eventually brought on for his fellow right-back.

  • Joleon Lescott
    7
    14
    3.00

    Joleon Lescott

Was one of the better performers across the backline and adopted the dictatorial role within the defensive ranks. Created City's momentum on the ball from deep.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov
    20
    6
    2.50

    Aleksandar Kolarov

Brilliant when foraying up the left-hand side but less convincing in his defensive duties as Sunderland looked to peg him back at any opportunity.

  • Martín Demichelis
    9
    10
    2.50

    Martín Demichelis

Looked markedly off the pace at times and struggled aerially against the dominant Fletcher. Seems more in control coming out with the ball but City need a dominant defensive figure in Kompany's absence.

  • James Milner
    6
    18
    2.00

James Milner Flop of the Match

The way he was bundled off the ball for the opener was woeful and his game never properly recovered. Offered very little from an attacking point of view in the opening period and, when he reverted to the centre of the park, it did not get much better either.

  • Samir Nasri
    6
    14
    2.50

    Samir Nasri

His fine recent form was replaced by another ineffectual performance from City's enigmatic Frenchman. Was even quite sloppy on the ball, one of his usual strengths.

  • Javi García
    8
    14
    2.50

    Javi García

Hauled off at half time mainly because City were going in search of goals but also due to his limited showing. Was booked but also seemed to be affected by Larsson's crude tackle.

  • Yaya Touré
    6
    13
    2.50

    Yaya Touré

Strangely subdued and looked weary on the ball. Not the same driving force fans associate him being at the Etihad. Couldn't get the better of an extremely determined Black Cats midfield.

  • Negredo
    13
    36
    3.00

    Negredo

A workhorse for City up top but was matched stride for stride by the former Manchester United defensive duo seeking to give their old side a helping hand in O'Shea and Brown. Struggled to utilise his clever link-up play with Aguero.

  • Sergio Agüero
    24
    29
    3.50

    Sergio Agüero

Not at his best but was by far the finest City performer on the day. Kept looking to take on the Sunderland rearguard and put them under pressure. Showed some lovely turns and skills when in full flight.

Substitutions

  • Pablo Zabaleta
    6
    13
    2.50

    Pablo Zabaleta

Came on midway through the second period but did not have a particularly meaningful impact from his slot on the right side of defence.

  • Jesús Navas González
    14
    14
    3.00

    Jesús Navas González

Offered his side a fresh attacking impetus after the interval and always had his head up as he sought to show Bardsley a clean pair of heels each time he got the ball.

  • Edin Dzeko
    32
    24
    2.50

    Edin Dzeko

Flattered to deceive when his side needed him most. Came on for Negredo in an attacking gamble by Pellegrini and it simply did not pay off as the Bosnian showed a heavy touch and not enough penetrative runs to breach the hosts' defence.
