Club History
One of the best "rags to riches" stories in MLS, Real Salt Lake struggled mightily for several years, starting with its inaugural season in 2005. But the team changed course beginning in 2007 when head coach John Ellinger was dismissed early in the year. He was replaced as coach by RSL's first-ever signed player, Jason Kreis, who retired to take the reins. Under the slogans "The Team is the Star" and "Audentis Fortuna Juvat" (Fortune Favors the Bold), Kreis slowly built a team of hard-working, blue-collar players, playing an attractive attacking style of soccer. Under Kreis, the team has improved its record each year and won the MLS Cup in 2009.
Notable former players:
Jason Kreis, Eddie Pope, Clint Mathis, Jeff Cunningham, Freddy Adu
