History:
With four MLS Cups to its name, including the first two in 1996 and
1997, the Red & Black have set the standard for MLS. United are
renowned for a devotion to attacking soccer and youth, a style
implemented by the club"s original manager, Bruce Arena, and manifested
by Bolivian central midfielder Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry who posted
40 goals and 101 assists in 191 appearances. Etcheverry had several
strong goalscorers alongside over the years, including Honduran Raul
Diaz Arce, American international Roy Lassiter, and Bolivian Jaime
Moreno. Moreno, still active, is the club's all-time leading scorer,
with 76 goals through 2004. A recent youth movement by coach Peter
Nowak has brought in the likes of Alecko Eskandarian, Santino Quaranta,
and the latest US phenom, Freddy Adu.
