Club History
Seattle Sounders FC became Major League Soccer’s 15th team in 2007 and started play in 2009. Fans voted for the team’s name, which links historically with the original Sounders of the NASL and the Seattle Sounders who played in the USL. Similar to Barcelona FC in Spain, the Sounders FC Alliance gives each season ticket holder the ability to vote on the direction of the team, including the decision to fire the general manager. Drew Carey is the chairman of this group. Sigi Schmid left the Columbus Crew after winning the MLS Cup in 2008 and joined the Sounders as their first head coach. In their inaugural season, the Sounders set a new MLS attendance record, averaging over 30,000 fans a game, and sold the highest number of season tickets. Seattle also qualified for the playoffs and has won the U.S. Open Cup two times in two years.
