Club History
Founded in 1974, the Caps rose to prominence by winning the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl. After the league folded in 1984, the Whitecaps re-emerged in 1986 as The Vancouver 86ers in the newly formed Canadian Soccer League. After many successful years as the 86ers they return to their original name the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2001. On March 19, 2009, with new part owner NBA star Steve Nash, it was announced the Vancouver Whitecaps FC would be an MLS expansion team, joining the league for the 2011 season.
