English-born Tommy Smith made his debut for the All Whites in the friendly defeat against Mexico in Los Angeles, USA, in front of rapturous 90,000-strong crowd.

Though the result didn’t tip in New Zealand’s favour, the 20-year-old’s performance – which won the praise from the press back ‘home’ in the Tasman – provided him a shoe-in to Ricki Herbert’s squad for the World Cup finals.

Injuries have somewhat stuttered Smith’s club career; he spent the majority of the 2008-09 season on the sidelines owing to an ankle injury. The defender found few first-team opportunities upon his return which set the premise for a short loan spell at Brentford, where he notched 8 appearances for the League One side.

He is now back with Ipswich Town, under the tutelage of Manchester United legend Roy Keane – with the Irishman intent on giving several of his youngster stars game-time heading into the season’s conclusion.

Interesting fact:

Smith represented his nation of birth, England, at U17 and U18 level but joined a growing list of footballers opting to forfeit their initial loyalties for the allure of international football
