If Ryan Nelsen is currently the most famous New Zealand player in the world of football then Shane Smeltz may take that accolade after the World Cup. Smeltz is as well-travelled as they come, despite still being the right side of 30.

He has plied his trade in England's lower leagues with the likes of Mansfield, Halifax and AFC Wimbledon - he was the first from the club to receive international honours - but it is since his return to Australia that he has really started to make waves.

Smeltz was the A-League's top scorer for Wellington Phoenix in the 2008 season with 12 goals. Such form earned him a move to new club Gold Coast United and he carried on where he left off on this side of the Tasman Sea by banging in an impressive 19 league goals - a record for the A-League.

Now Smeltz, very much a goalmouth predator, is on the radar of clubs in Europe and Asia and the World Cup is an ideal opportunity for the striker to show what he can do against some of the best defenders around.

In fact he has already shown his worth when he scored against Italy just before the Confederations Cup in June 2009 to keep up a healthy goalscoring ratio for the All Whites and has also appeared on the score sheet against Chile and Wales.

Smeltz thrives on good service and comes alive in and around the penalty area and is also good in the air.
